What do honeymooners want? Answers may vary, but generally, privacy, beauty and luxury are at the top of the list, and Capella Lodge, in Australia’s Lord Howe Island, fits the bill perfectly.
Resting atop Lovers Bay, at the base of twin flat mountains towering above, the organic-inspired architectural design of the lodge offers romantic views of the ocean, coral reefs and dense vegetation surrounding the property.
The nine modern suites here have been carefully designed to respect Lord Howe’s pristine natural environment. Sprawling king-sized beds, locally sourced timber and quality white cottons decorate the spacious bedrooms, which carry a sophisticated beach house vibe. There are also Bose music systems, DVD players, and free WiFi, but with white sandy beaches, challenging mountain walks and a riot of marine life to explore, it’s unlikely you’ll be staying in much to use them.
After spending long days in the surf, sun and sand. guests refresh and revive in their oversized rain showers, using all-natural, island-inspired Capella Spa toiletries. Slick slab vanities contrast the earthy handcrafted ceramic and resin bathware, and of course, lush beach towels and pillowy slippers and bathrobes are supplied.
In the evening, while guests dine on locally sourced seafood, homemade pasta and organic vegetables, housekeeping slips into their rooms to provide the nightly sensory turndown service.
But not only is Capella Lodge one of Australia’s finest high-end luxury properties, it is also one of its most eco-friendly.
A small resident population (around 350 people) and a limited amount of permitted of tourists (just 400 at any one time) ensures the island’s natural environment remains pristine, and Capella Lodge has made great efforts to harvest rainwater and to use solar energy. They also carefully manage their waste, recycling and composting whenever possible, and they work together with local producers to source their food, as well as growing their own vegetables and herbs. Finally, guests are transported on the island by electric vehicles and bicycles only.
While myriad couples have enjoyed exceptional honeymoons at this stunning resort, no doubt each one feels this special spot in Lord Howe Island is ‘theirs’. With the strong, positive ecological measures taken by Capella Lodge in place, hopefully this same sentiment will be felt by many honeymooning couples to come.
