I have a confession: just three or four years ago, I didn’t even know what kombucha was. And when I learned it was a fermented tea, well…it didn’t sound too appealing.

But loads of people I knew swore by its health properties, so I decided to dig in a bit and see what this stuff was all about.

I learned that kombucha has been around for more than 2000 years. It was first created in China, and then spread to Japan and Russia. It’s only in the 20th century that the sweet-and-sour fizzy drink started getting popular in Europe, then America.

One of the many reasons why kombucha became popular is its reputation as a health drink and natural energy booster. As with most fermented products, it’s also said to be full of probiotics.

1. It’s Great For Detoxing

The first reason you should drink kombucha more is because it provides B vitamins, and handful of essential minerals. But because it’s also packed with organic acids (like when vinegar ferments) such as acetic, glucuronic and D-Saccharic acids, kombucha can help you detox.

How? Well, these acids have been shown to be antimicrobial, so they fight against bad bacterial growth in your body. They can also promote detoxification by helping the liver get rid of undesired compounds that it has to process.

That being said, it’s important to note that some varieties of kombucha seem to be more powerful than others. For example, kombucha made from green tea has been shown to have more beneficial effects on liver health. One animal study found that the levels of liver toxicity in rats fell by as much as 70% after being administered kombucha.

This is because one of the main substances produced during the fermentation of kombucha is acetic acid, which is also abundant in vinegar. And like the polyphenols in tea, acetic acid is able to kill many potentially harmful microorganisms.

Kombucha made from black or green tea appears to have strong antibacterial properties, particularly against infection-causing bacteria and Candida yeasts. These antimicrobial effects suppress the growth of undesirable bacteria and yeasts, but they do not affect the beneficial, probiotic bacteria and yeasts involved in kombucha fermentation. This is great for those of us who are prone to yeast infections of all kinds.

As you can see, there are loads of reasons why you should drink kombucha more. But keep in mind: too much of anything is bad for you, of course. The Centers for Disease Control recommends that four ounces of kombucha can be safely consumed one to three times a day. Overall, you shouldn’t consume more than 12 ounces of kombucha a day. 

But that’s plenty, right?
