Solar Impulse, the lauded solar aeroplane, has successfully completed the second leg of its historic attempt to fly around the world. Its landing in Ahmedabad completes the second leg of the world’s First Round-The-World Solar Flight, with Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg having taken the controls for one exciting, unforgettable flight each.

The Chairman of the project, Bertrand Piccard, piloted the vehicle from Muscat in Oman to Ahmedabad in India, crossing the Arabian Sea in the process.

The plane covered a distance of 1,468km, going for 15 hours without conventional fuel, thus setting a new world record for a flight in a piloted solar-powered plane, and proving to the world that airplane emissions should become a thing of the polluted past.

Frenchman Piccard shared  flying duties with project partner and CEO of the project, Andre Borschberg, who made Monday’s inaugural trip from Abu Dhabi to Muscat. The plane  arrived in Ahmedabad at night time, with its wings illuminated by LED lights, and its propellers driven by the stored solar energy in its batteries.

So successful has the flight been, that preparations are already under way for the next leg to Varanasi in northeast India. Meantime, the pilots will spend time  campaigning their message on the topic of  clean technologies to the local Ahmedabad people, and the wider Indian population.
