Since Eluxe was launched, we’ve been huge fans of Abury, the ethical German label with a heart. Amongst other projects, Abury has revived the art of creating embroidered eco-leather bags in small communities in Morocco, and has created a capsule collection of knitwear using pure Ecuadorian yarn.
If you love Abury’s designs, you’ll be delighted to know that you may have a hand in creating them yourself!
The brand has teamed up with Eluxe and Harper’s Bazaar Germany to create an opportunity for up-and-coming designers to help do what Abury does best: conserve artisanal traditions and cultures. The Abury Design Experience is a competition that offers emerging designers the chance to create an accessory capsule collection using traditional techniques from the culture of their choice.
The competition is open to students in fashion or accessory design or recently established fashion or accessories designers who are able to beautifully combine artisanal techniques, cultural heritage, and of course, cutting-edge modern design. Entrants must be 21 or over, will have graduated from school no more than 5 years ago, and can be from any country. You must submit a design portfolio and a short video explaining why you want to be a part of the Abury Design Experience.
What You Could Win
10 designers will be selected by Harpers Bazaar Germany and Abury for the semi-finals, and two will be chosen as winners in the final round. One winner will be selected through online voting, and the other by a prestigious jury that includes Kerstin Schneider, Editor in Chief, Harper’s Bazaar Germany; Diana Verde Nieto, the CEO Positive Luxury; and more. These finalists will also be featured in Eluxe Magazine online.
The two finalists will receive a travel and production budget up to €5000 and will spend up to three exciting months either in Morocco or Ecuador, creating their collection with local artisans for roughly three months. The collections will be marketed and sold under the Abury label along with the name of the designer. Half of the profits will be re-invested into education projects in one of the countries mentioned.
Best of all, the winners will also become a part of Abury’s permanent design staff; will be featured on the Abury website; will travel to Berlin to attend several workshops and events provided by sponsors and partners, and will be featured in Eluxe Magazine’s printed edition.
