Kathleen Lights Wants To Make Your Fingers Prettier

By Chere Di Boscio

Big news! Popular beauty Youtuber and influencer Kathleen Lights has created a gorgeous 5 free nail brand called  KL Polish. After collaborating with a wide variety of beauty brands, she felt there was still a gap in the market for a clean beauty nail polish that’s safe, ethical, affordable, and works for every skin tone.

Kathleen ensured that she was directly involved with every aspect of creating these polishes from start to finish. She had a few criteria in mind: the polishes had to be vegan friendly and thick enough to go on with one coat only; the bottle design had to be simple and minimalistic, and the polishes had to dry super fast. She also ensured the brushes had a rounded shape that mirrors the shape of the fingernail, making application easy.

For colors, she draws from her personal life and the world around her to create unique and trendy options with her 3.5 million plus YouTube fans in mind. Coming from a large Cuban-American family whose members have a wide range of skin tones, Kathleen was able to test every potential color on all of her family  and friends to ensure that each shade looks great on all kinds of skin.

As Kathleen explained in this exclusive interview, she continues to release new collections, limited edition colors, and has several exciting new products in the works….

With so many potential shades, how did you decide which colors you wanted to bring to the market?

In the beginning, I tried to choose unique shades that other brands weren’t doing. For instance, Caramello is a shade a lot of people probably didn’t have in their collection and because of that, it’s become one of our best sellers!

Why is being 5-free so important to you?

Most people  don’t realize how harmful certain ingredients are for your body. What you put on your nails can go directly into your bloodstream so I knew I wanted to make a product that was safe to use for everyone! I want people to feel good about using KL Polish.

Do you remember the first time you used nail polish?

I honestly don’t remember. I  have loved nail polish for so long!

What are your favorite current nail trends?

I think the ‘negative space’ nail art trend it really interesting! We see a lot of our customers use their KL Polish this way. I love that you only need one color but it still has some abstract elements.

How did being Cuban-American influence the choices of colors you made?

I think my background has influenced me to create some bold and fun shades that set KL Polish apart from other  brands. Last year’s summer collection was all about Miami which is a huge part of who I am. There also may be a future collection that’s Cuban inspired….!

Do you usually match your mani to your pedi?

Nope. My toes are always a nude shade or red. I never match them cause I’m constantly testing new shades.

What do your nails look like right now?

I just had them painted for a photoshoot so they are a color from my future Summer collection. If you watch my channel, you will sometimes see me wearing colors that haven’t been launched yet.

What are your top 3 nail care tips?

I think using a base coat and a top coat really helps with the longevity of your nail polish. I also always use a cuticle  oil before I paint my nails; this helps to strengthen the nails and add some moisture. As a third tip, I suggest giving your nails a break from polish every so often!

If you could design another cosmetics line, what would it be?

I still dream of someday having a makeup line, but thats way way in the future if I ever stop doing YouTube.

Finally, what’s next for ‘brand you’?

For now, I’m focused on continuing to expand the KL Polish line and grow the brand; we have a lot of exciting stuff coming that I can’t wait for everyone to see. And of course, my Youtube channel.
