A Model Knows: Beauty Tips from Daniela Christiansson

By Chere Di Boscio

Blonde haired, blue eyed, perfect toothed Daniela Christiansson is much more than a pretty face. The international top model is also the founder of Conscious-Ness, a green fashion blog, and Green Fashion Week, now in its second season.

Daniela is passionate about sustainability and organic health, though she admits she’s just beginning to learn about these issues. The Swedish born, Switzerland and Italy residing model is often in the headlines in Europe and Argentina thanks to being in a couple with Maxi Lopez, the handsome Argentine forward for the Italian football club Torino. In fact, you could say that  the pair form a “conscious Posh ‘n’ Becks”!

Here, we asked Daniela to share a bit about her beauty routine, which involves some surprises, like eating jewellery, prickly pears, and bathing in wine, to name just a few…

What’s your daily skin care  routine like?

The first thing I do when I wake up is to drink a large glass of water. I believe it’s important to do an internal body cleanse as a first step in the morning, to wake up the cells and hydrate the body. Then I drink hot water with the juice of half a lemon, 30 minutes before eating breakfast.  There are so many health benefits for doing this.

Then I clean my face with a gentle and organic skincare as I have sensitive skin which is often exposed to external toxins (pollution, hair and makeup products, smoke and so on). I am always trying products that brands are sending to me which I love,  because it helps me discover  many cool new brands and skincare innovations.

Right now I am cleaning my face with Mira Dror, an Argentinian skincare brand made of natural ingredients. I tone it with Moroccan Natural rose water and hydrate it with my Mira Dror moisturizing cream mixed with Pure Pearl Powder by Moroccan Natural.  If I have a little irritation or redness, which can easily happen after work, I use Prickly Pear Seed Oil, also by  Moroccan Natural, to calm it down.

After my shower, I always hydrate my body. I’m currently  using 100% Pure Coconut Body Lotion, which has such lovely fragrance that stays on your skin all day!

Before going to bed, I do the same ritual as in the morning but without the lemon hot  water. Mira Dror cleaning products are gentle and work well as a makeup remover as well.

Do you also use natural products on your hair?

Yes!  I am putting the Sublime Oil by My Organics to protect the ends and strengthen my hair against environmental toxins. My job can easily damage my hair, so it’s important to protect it.

I never use  hairspray out of work and I wash my hair every second day if possible, but sometimes because of my work I have to do it every day. Currently I am using Saachs Organics hair shampoo and conditioner. I try to avoid to blow drying whenever possible.

Do you only use organic makeup?

I have to wear a lot of ‘normal’ makeup  because of my job, so I use as little makeup every day as possible. Normally I only use Lavera volume mascara, a gloss and concealer. Sometimes, I may use a little bit of Hynt blush if my skin is “grey”. I find that pearl powder is definitely a remedy against that as it promotes skin radiance. It’s my new favourite product! I also sprinkle it on food sometimes.

When did you decide to switch to green cosmetics and skincare, and why?

Exactly one year ago, when I finally started my website, “Conscious-Ness”. I had started to research as many organic products as possible of every type and got intensely attracted by green cosmetics and care because I’ve realized the damage I was doing to the environment and myself (by using mainstream cosmetics). It is so logical that what you put on your skin goes into your body. Ultimately, it’s as important as what you eat. I’ve always believed that “you are what you eat”. So  why not apply that to your skin, too?

Which challenges have you faced making the switch to cleaner cosmetics?

Finding local products! There are many on the market but my issue was to find them in Italy, where I am currently living. I find that the most known  ones are from the US and Australia, making the shipping complicated and also bad for the environment. But as my work as a model makes me travel a lot, I quickly resolved the problem. Every time I am visit  another country, such as Paris or Barcelona, even Switzerland, where you can find a lot of them and from diverse brands, I buy  some.

As a model, how do you deal with makeup artists just using whatever chemical products they want to on your skin?

Unfortunately I can do nothing about this issue because the makeup artists use the products they know and are used to. However, more of them are getting curious and are trying or starting to use organic products!

You travel for work a lot. What are some of the beauty discoveries you’ve made from around the world?

I’ve discovered many things, but to make it really worldwide and exotic, I’ll say bathing in red wine! It acts as an antioxidant, and people do this in Piemonte, Italy. I also discovered  Rosa Mosqueta in Argentina. It’s a local plant full of beauty benefits and it’s very cheap.

What are some of the weirdest things you’ve done for beauty?

Well, there is the wine bath I mentioned, and every day I eat a bit of pearl powder. What a luxury!

Which products can you just not live without?

I  have to say that I’m addicted to pearl powder for the radiance it gives to your skin and all the vitamins and antioxidants it contains! I also love to say that I am eating jewels  for breakfast. Yes, you can eat it! It’s a very fine powder you can sprinkle onto smoothies or cereal.

In general, I always need to moisturize and would not like to be without a lip balm. I hate having dry skin and lips.

Finally, what are your top 3 beauty tips that anyone could follow?

1.Drink a lot of water. 2. Eat clean whenever possible 3. Exercise. Pretty natural, right?

‘The Swiss model’ – I thought she was Swedish?! Pls don’t tell me you made the classic mistake of mixing up Sweden and Switzerland (for no apparent reason other than the first two same letters!!) 😉

      Hi Anna
I think Daniela is a bit of both – Swedish born, living in Switzerland if I understand correctly?
