Ever wonder why organic wine is better for you? Here are 5 reasons you may not have known about!

Consumer awareness towards organic products has seriously gained traction over the past decades. People are getting more concerned about the quality of the food and drinks they consume. The market shows significantly increased demand for organic consumables, and wine is no exception.

Sure, we know that studies have confirmed drinking wine in moderation can improve our overall health. But…what kind of wine is best?

Vegans will likely be aware that some wines use animal products to filter the drink, or to add to its flavour. So, they’ll look for vino that’s 100% animal-free. But did you know that most wines -even vegan ones – contain many artificial chemicals and quality boosters that can harm your body over time?

Luckily, there’s a whole branch of chemical-free wines that are safe to consume on regular basis. Here are just a few reasons why organic wine is better for you.

5 Health Benefits of Drinking Organic Wine

Why Organic Wine Is Better For You: 5 Reasons

If you’re wondering why drinking organic wine is better for your health, here’s a brief rundown on the main things you need to know before grabbing your next bottle of wine

1. You’ll Consume Fewer Chemicals

The most obvious reason why organic wine is better for your health is that it contains no (or very low) pesticides, herbicides or artificial fertilisers. For a wine to be labelled as “organic’ it must be made by at least 95% organically farmed grapes.

Conventional winemaking involves spraying vineyards with various herbicides and pesticides against the insects and weeds that damage the quality of the grapes. These chemicals invariably find their way into bottled wine. In a nutshell, organic wine is cleaner and more natural product compared to conventional wine.

When a wine is labelled as organic, this means that the entire winemaking process uses a different approach, from the vineyards to the bottling. That’s better not only for you, but for the soil, insects and wildlife, too.

2. You’ll Avoid Sulphites

Sulphur dioxide is a powerful preservative used in wine production. The chemical is added to preserve the colour and to prevent oxidation, as well as microbial contamination.

Generally, the use of sulphites is allowed and approved by most governments, in certain amounts. That’s despite the fact that some people suffer from certain side effects from it. For example, those who have severe asthma or those who lack certain enzymes necessary to digest the sulphites. Sulphites can also cause skin redness, hives, or speckled skin.

Sulphite content in wine is regulated by TTB and EFSA governing bodies. Based on these regulations, the amount of sulphites in European wine is up to 210 ppm, while American wines can contain up to 350 ppm. Every bottle of wine containing over 10 ppm must come with the “contains sulphites” label.

But when it comes to organic wine, the amount of contained sulphites is much lower. This is another reason why organic wine is better for your health.

Certified organic wines will contain the name or logo of Eco Cert, USDA Organic and Demeter on their labels.

3. Organic Wine Is Lower in Sugar

Did you know that wine can be a source of hidden sugars? In most cases, the sweetness of wine is a blend of naturally occurring and artificially added sugar. This is directly connected to the alcohol content in the wine. For example, if the wine contains higher sugar levels, natural or added, the final alcohol content will be higher (ABV). This is one of the reasons why wine producers tend to add extra sugar to the wine.

Another purpose for adding extra sugar to wine is to conceal the taste flaws and improve the overall impression. This may be inconvenient for people with sugar intolerance, diabetes, or for those who just are not keen on consuming sugar.

The good news is that organic wine doesn’t contain extra added sugars. The amount of sugar found in an organic bottle of wine is exclusively natural and certainly healthier. Just another reason why organic wine is better!

4. It’s Lower in Additives

The conventional winemaking process is complex and demanding. A number of natural factors that humans cannot control have a direct impact on the quality and successful wine production. For instance, poor weather conditions can significantly affect the final outcome of a grape, and therefore, a wine.

Consequently, most wine-making houses use various additives like colour and taste enhancers, chemicals that intensify certain grape notes, and preservatives that prolong a wine’s shelf life. All these ingredients have a negative influence on biological diversity and your health.

Organic wine is made according to different farming standards that include sustainability and protection of the natural ecosystem.

5. Organic Wine Hangovers Are Less Painful

Being the healthier and more natural option, organic wine is less likely to give you a hangover in the morning after. The lower sulphite and sugar levels allow you to fully enjoy your wine without fearing a terrible headache the next day. For some, this might be the most important reason why organic wine is better!

Of course, no matter what wine you choose, it’s important to drink in moderation in order to prevent more serious health issues and side effects of alcohol overconsumption.
