Where To Buy & Sell Used Baby Items

Wondering where to buy & sell used baby items? I’ve done the research for you!

By Lora O’Brien

Babies grow out of things faster than we can blink. Which means we can amass quite a lot of stuff. The cute onesies, the baby rocker, the pram…

Sure, it’s adorable and nostalgic. But unless you have plans to use it with another baby, it kind of sits collecting dust when it could be making you a small fortune instead!

On the other hand, if you prefer to shop secondhand for your babies, you can save a lot of money – and the planet!

But if you’re wondering where to buy and sell used baby items, let me lend you a hand. Here below, I’ve found some of the best places to do just that. I’ve used some of these places myself – both as a seller and buyer. And believe me: it feels great to be part of the circular economy!

Not only did I make some money selling my girl’s old stuff, but I also saved some buying her ‘new’ items, too. And did I mention: my house is a lot tidier, too?

Where To Buy & Sell Second Hand Baby Stuff

1. Toycycle

Toycycle launched in 2019, and was a local buy and sell platform for those in the San Francisco Bay area, but it now includes the rest of the U.S. The platform accepts new, like new and used items which remain in excellent condition, so it’s good for reselling items you bought and perhaps never used.

How it works: Sign up with an account and then you choose how you wish to sell. If you live in the Bay area, or near Austin, Texas, you can use curbside pickup, otherwise you’ll need to use a Cleanout Box for toys, or a Stuff-and-Send bag for softer items such as clothes. No photos are required – Toycycle does it all for you. You’re then paid with cash, store credit or you can donate to a charity of choice.

Seller fees: Your first bag of items sold through Toycycle is free, after that there is a $3 charge per Stuff-and-Send bag, $6 per Cleanout Box and curbside pickup is $12. Depending on the price of your item, Toycycle takes an 85% fee for items under $10 to 20% for bigger items.

One of the best places to buy and sell used baby items for: Buying reduced toys! But they also sell clothing and household items such as high chairs, car seats and even strollers.

2. eBay

The eBay platform was one of the first sites for selling and buying secondhand items. Sure, there are indeed other platforms available today, but eBay is still a faithful way to get rid of unwanted items and an excellent way for buyers to shop secondhand easily online.

How it works: To start, you’ll need an account. Once live, simply take photos, add details and upload. You’ll need to set postage costs before listing the items, which the buyer pays, and you’re then responsible for buying postage once sold. The platform is easy to navigate and you can upload items before deciding whether to offer a ‘buy it now’ price or to set an auction where potential buyers can bid for the item listed.

Seller fees: eBay takes around a 13% fee for each item sold, which is deducted before your funds are released to you. You may also boost items so they feature higher up on the search page, which is an additional 2%.

One of the best places to buy and sell used baby items for: Specific or harder to find items. Perhaps a baby carrier or pram sold out. But you’ll likely find it on eBay!

3. thredUP

ThredUP is an online thrift store. Founded in 2009 by a grad student, the site was initially made for peers to swap clothes, but now it’s a huge online marketplace selling children’s and even ethical baby clothing, too!

How it works: Start by creating an account. Then you order a free thredUP Clean Out Kit. This is basically a big bag which you fill with gently used items that you wish to resell. Mail the items using the prepaid shipping label and then employees take care of checking items over and listing them for sale. They also take care of all transactions and they even handle shipping!

Seller fees: On thredUP, you’re given the option to get paid via PayPal or to store funds as store credit. You only get paid once your items sell, which has to happen within 60 days for kids’ brands, and then 20 to 97% is deducted from your final amount. The higher the quality an item is, the more money you will make.

One of the best places to buy and sell used baby items for: Hugely discounted clothing! Items sell for 20 to 90% off retail prices, and is a great way to shop secondhand.

4. Kidizen

Kidizen is an online marketplace that was founded by two moms as a means of buying and selling cute clothes for little ones. The platform has Etsy vibes, and each seller is given an online ‘shop’ through which they sell their items and make money.

How it works: Much like most platforms, you sign up, take photos, write descriptions, choose a price and upload to sell. Once you’re a member, you can use the Kidizen platform to ask other sellers for tips. .

Seller fees: Every time you make a sale, Kidizen takes 12% plus 50 cents. Sellers are also responsible for paying the shipping costs and have to create their own labels.

5. OfferUp

OfferUp uses an app to help connect buyers to nearby sellers. It’s pretty similar to the Craigslist platform. It provides people with an easy way to shop secondhand locally. The app was set up by two Seattle dads who wanted to get rid of the baby gear they no longer needed, so it’s approved by parents!

How it works: Selling is pretty easy: simply take photos, set a price and upload! In 30 seconds your item can be listed, but it may take longer trying to find a buyer. Much like Craig’s List, there may be back and fourth between you and potential buyers as they ask questions and you discuss the price etc. You can then either arrange to meet to exchange goods for cash, or you can use USPS to ship to 48 states.

Seller fees: After a sale is completed, OfferUp will charge either a minimum cost of $1.99 or 12.9% of the sale price.

Poshmark is currently one of the biggest marketplace apps. It’s great if you have a thing for designer brands. You’ll also find more affordable children’s wear on there, too.

How it works: Use the website or download the app to sell. Simply hit the ‘sell’ button and upload photos, a description and a price before selling. Once sold, Poshmark will send you a repair, pre-addressed shipping label. Pack up the sold item and arrange delivery either from your home or by dropping to a post office.

Seller fees: For every item under $15 Poshmark takes a flat commission of $2.95, and for items over this, 20% is deducted from the final sale.

7. Facebook Marketplace

Forget scrolling Facebook for status updates – the social media platform is a fabulous way to resell pretty much anything! It’s also a really great marketplace to grab yourself a bargain, too.

How it works: The Facebook Marketplace area is where you can sell items. Simply take photos, upload to the right category and then await buyers messaging you. You then arrange whether you’re sending the item to them, or are arranging a place to meet to exchange the goods for money. Alternatively, you can join niche Facebook groups to sell items. Whether you’re looking for wooden toys, Yoto audio cards or Jellycat toys, there are lots of groups to buy and sell in.

Seller fees: Selling to Facebook Marketplace doesn’t cost anything, but if you sell through PayPal, you’ll want to select the Goods and Services option to protect your sale, which deducts just under 3% of the sale.

One of the best places to buy and sell used baby items for: Buying bigger items for cheap. Many people sell furniture or garden toys cheaply, sometimes even for free. You just have to drive to pick them up. It’s a great way to buy and upcyle!

8. Once Upon A Child

Once Upon A Child isn’t online, but it’s such a great way to shop, I couldn’t not include it. The store offers clothing and toys up to 70% off the retail price, so it’s a super affordable way for parents to shop great brands at a heavily reduced price. Plus, when you have items your own children have outgrown, you can sell them to the store.

By buying and selling gently used clothing, shoes, toys and baby gear you help to keep those items out of landfills, giving them a new life for another child to enjoy. Who doesn’t love that?

How it works: Take your items to your local store and they check them there and then. They will then offer you a cash price, which you can accept or refuse.

Seller fees: No fees! Simply sell your items and get paid.

Much like the name suggests, The Buy Nothing Project is free! Users link up with others in their area to exchange items. This is a really great way to help those out in need, but to also ask for help if you’re struggling. They say it takes a village to raise children for a reason, so get connecting!

How it works: So, you can only join a Buy Nothing group for the area you live. Once in, you can post a listing detailing what you’re hoping to find. If someone in the group has what you’re looking for, you can converse with them and arrange pickup.

Seller fees: Absolutely none!
