The spirit of Chanel lives on in this Karl Lagerfeld x Amber Valletta Capsule Collection

What happens when you bring together one of the most glamorous fashion houses, and one of America’s top (ethical) supermodels? Sustainable fashion magic, is what!

The much-lauded fashion house launched by the (sadly deceased) German creative director (who, of course, once also headed Chanel) chose to create a sustainable capsule collection. Super model and actress Amber Valletta was chosen to help promote it, for two great reasons.

One, Valletta is well known for her promotion of eco-fashion through such ventures as her Master & Muse curation on Yoox. She is also committed to several ecological associations, and is a prominent speaker on environmental topics. And two, she was also once the muse of the great couturier.

The first Karl Lagerfeld x Amber Valletta collection came out last year, and everyone involved was thrilled. Pier Paolo Righi, CEO of Karl Lagerfeld expressed his delight in teaming up with Amber Valletta, saying “I’m so excited to bring Amber on board as a sustainable collaborator, to work on such a project and be able to benefit from her great insights and our shared passion for environmental sustainability. Amber and Karl worked together for many years, and she is a true members of the Karl Lagerfeld family.

Valletta expressed her enthusiasm in joining the initiative, by remembering her personal relationship with the fashion guru, “Karl and I had so much history together and I’m excited to be partnering with his namesake brand for a project that’s so meaningful to both of us,” she said and continued, “The K/Kushion bag is such a versatile style, and I love how ours will be made with innovative materials and respect for the environment.

This year, the Karl Lagerfeld x Amber Valletta capsule collection features more gorgeous fashion than ever. It’s comprised of eco-friendly accessories, including a variant of the much coveted and rather iconic ‘K/Kushion’ bag. But this time, it’s made of vegan cactus leather or recycled cotton.

The inspiration for this vegan bag comes from a tailor-made cushion that Karl Lagerfeld used to carry on his many trips around the globe. It’s soft and comfy enough to lay your head on when travelling on planes, in buses, or in the car.

The K/Kushion comes in two fabrics. One is a vegan-friendly cactus leather, engineered by Desserto in Mexico. The ‘leather’ for the bags has been coloured with organic pigments – either green or black. The other fabric option for the bag is organic cotton, made from 90% recycled cotton in a neutral sandy nuance. This option is also impeccably vegan-friendly and sustainable, and the fabric has even been certified by the Global Recycle Standard.

But there’s more than bags in the Karl Lagerfeld x Amber Valletta collection this year! For example? There’s a comfy, stretchy black dress; a slightly retro cropped black leather jacket; and beautifully tailored trousers, jackets and shirts.

Fashion That Gives Back, Too

Planet-friendliness wasn’t enough for the makers of the Karl Lagerfeld x Amber Valletta collection. They wanted it to be ethical, too. So they decided to give the profits back to an initiative they believe in. Namely, the Fashion Pact.

This is a global coalition of companies in the fashion and textile industry that launched in 2019. Both the suppliers and distributors of fashion who signed the pact pledged to a common core of key environmental goals in three areas: stopping global warming, restoring biodiversity and protecting our oceans. Today, more than 60 global fashion brands have committed to the pact, and this capsule collection will also support this mission.

All proceeds from the sales of the K/Kushion bag will be specifically donated to ‘The Ocean Cleanup’, a non-profit engineering environmental organisation that develops advanced technologies to rid the oceans of plastic.

Each item in the collection is sure to be a collector’s item. It will be sold exclusively for 24 hours on karl.com & Zalando on April 6th, and will then be more widely available in stores across Europe and the USA the following day. That is, if everything doesn’t sell out first!
