The Earth Top Handle Bag by Salvatore Ferragamo marks a new step towards sustainability for the brand

We were first impressed with the eco-efforts of Salvatore Ferragamo when they launched a stunning collection of clothing and accessories made from orange ‘silk‘. Yep, that’s right: a luscious vegan ‘silk’ made from waste from the juicing industry.

These garments, which included lightweight blouses, scarves, dresses, trousers and foulards, had all the hallmarks of the brand: expertly crafted, with a strict attention to detail, and an unmistakable Italian flare.

And now, in celebration of Earth Day 2021, Salvatore Ferragamo is launching yet another collection derived from nature: their Earth Top Handle bag.

Made of neutrally hued FSC certified cork, the bag was designed to match everything in your wardrobe. As you may know, cork is a natural and renewable resource that causes no harm to the trees when harvested. In addition, the lining is crafted from pure linen, a natural and biodegradable material. The zipper tape and thread are made of 100% recycled and certified polyester, and the bag’s colour is finished with non-toxic, water-based treatments.

As always with Ferragamo’s accessories, this bag is exclusive. The design was inspired by the fashion house’s iconic Top Handle bag created by Fiamma Ferragamo in the 90s. It became a top seller for its flexible use, perfect proportions and eternally chic design. Only 500 numbered pieces of the Earth Top Handle bag will be created, making this Earth-friendly fashion not only highly covetable with top fashionistas and the jet set, but something of a collector’s item, too.

Virtuous Luxury

Synonymous with artisanal Italian craftsmanship, creativity and innovation, Ferragamo is one of the few high fashion houses that has chosen to adopt a social responsibility strategy which, in line with the Founder’s values, pursues objectives of economic growth while taking into account the social and environmental impact. As a reflection of those values, the Earth Top Handle bag has received a ISO 14067 – Product Carbon Footprint certification. What that means is that all emissions from the making of the bag have been compensated for. In other words, the bag is not only stunning, but it’s also fully carbon neutral.

CEO Micaela le Divelec Lemmi stresses how important solid ethics and Italian traditions are to the brand “Authentic craftsmanship, creativity and innovation are Salvatore Ferragamo’s core values. So is sustainability. Salvatore Ferragamo, during his years of activity, was never afraid to innovate and use new materials. Today we continue to do so, with a look at the present. The experimental spirit, the Italian inventiveness, the sense of beauty and refinement, the connection between our feelings and social and environmental responsibility, are essential characteristics of our collections”.

To assist them with their eco-efforts, Salvatore Ferragamo has enlisted the aid of Rete Clima, a non-profit organisation promoting actions and projects that fight climate change. With Rete Clima, the company will support the project for the protection of Tuscan cork forests certified with PEFC standard, obtaining carbon offset through sustainable forest management actions in the Paganico estate, which extends for over 1200 hectares near Grosseto.

There’s a lot to love about the Earth Top Handle bag. Firstly, it’s a reminder that Earth Day should be every day. Secondly, it’s a stunning classic that should be handed down through the generations. And thirdly, it’s a lovely notion that you’ll be carrying a bit of a Tuscan forest with you, every time you step out.

  1. Wow! I do a little happy dance every time I see the larger fashion houses taking genuine steps towards sustainable, vegan alternatives. I’ve been no-meat/no-leather my entire life, so seeing shifts like this happen in my lifetime is truly delightful.
Thank you for sharing this cork design ELUXE 🙂 It’s a beauty!
