Yoga has gone from being a trend for health bunnies, to being part of everyday life for many Europeans. Many city dwellers needing to unwind have ended up at one of Kaliyoga’s retreats in Spain or France, and now the wellness holiday specialist has opened a new venue, in the sunny Italian countryside.
A 17th century farmhouse is the base for the newest Kaliyoga property, and houses its guests in wonderfully restored drystone ‘Trulli’ cottages. The Trulli are limestone dwellings found in the southern region of Puglia, and their unique design has made them part of a Unesco Worldwide Heritage. These are remarkable and eco-friendly examples of mortarless construction (no use of cement), a prehistoric building technique still used in this region. Featuring conical roofs with ancient symbols painted on them, the Trulli at Kaliyoga Italy are amongst the best preserved buildings of this type in Europe.
This warm-hearted wellness retreat accommodates up to 16 people maximum, so each guest receives much personal attention from the hosts. Holidays include: twice daily yoga and meditation sessions, delicious Italian vegetarian cuisine, top holistic therapies and, if desired, afternoon bicycle rides and walks through quiet country lanes where guests can absorb the local culture. There’s lots to see here: visit ancient olive mills, wine-taste at local vineyards, walk along Roman aqueducts and ride through the woods at a Murgese horse ranch. The gorgeous baroque towns of Martina Franca and Locorotondo are only 10 minutes away and the lovely beaches of the Ionian and Adriatic coasts are only 25 minutes away.
And of course, there is the yoga. Sessions are held with Tashidawa, Kaliyoga’s renowned teacher, who invites practitioners to explore Ashtanga yoga, modified to suit all levels. To further facilitate well-being, a range of holistic treatments such as Thai yoga massage, Reflexology, Ayurvedic Massage, Indian Head Massage, Hot Stone Massage, Lymphatic Drainage & Equine Therapy are available on request.
In between activities, guests can relax by snoozing in a hammock, swimming in the large pool, melting in the jacuzzi or chatting to new friends in the shade of an olive tree. The retreat aims to allow guests to come to a state of total rest and develop the tools to gain a fresh, positive outlook on life. Kaliyoga offers warmth, nourishing support, humour, healing and nurture–all of which should be incorporated into everyone’s everyday life.
