She’s kicked some serious ass as Jessica Jones, overdosed on heroin in Breaking Bad and was infamously the untrustworthy B**** in Apartment 23 on TV. Given the badass characters Krysten Ritter has played as an actress, it may come as a bit of a surprise that this black haired beauty is actually highly enthusiastic about a hobby shared with many grannies: knitting.
In fact, the star has recently collaborated on collection with DIY knitwear brand We Are Knitters. In case you’re not as familiar with We Are Knitters as you may be with Krysten, they’re a DIY knitting fashion and lifestyle brand founded by María José Marín and Alberto Bravo.
We Are Knitters is fully dedicated to recreating the ancient craft of knitting and transforming it into something modern and stylish.
The collaborative collection, which you can find on the brand’s website, features eight standout kits with pieces all designed by the actress herself. For us, some of the best pieces in the collection include the Krysten Easy Sweater, the Krysten Ritter Snood and the adorable “Mikey” Dog Sweater.
This latter item gels well with Krysten’s dedication to animal welfare; she worked with PETA to stop Sea World from using orcas for entertainment, and posed for a PETA ad campaign in 2013, warning pet owners of the dangers of leaving dogs in cars during the hotter months. The dog sweater was designed by Krysten for her own little rescue dog, Mikey Mohawk, who Krysten says “has made my life so much better.”
Here, she tells Eluxe about how her gram, best friend and beloved pup all influenced her designs for this unique collaboration.
So, when did you first learn to knit?
My Gram taught me to knit when I was little but I didn’t pick it up again until I worked on a movie (Mona Lisa Smile) with Julia Roberts. She always had a big bag with her knitting and the whole cast of women got super into it. It was a movie set in the 1950’s with a huge cast of women and you would just see everyone knitting. It was really cool and I got very into it after that.
How did you start working with We Are Knitters?
The collaboration with We Are Knitters was very organic because I actually use and love all their yarn and I starting posting my projects and tagging them on social media. So I teamed up with them to create an Infinity Scarf knitting kit that debuted in February. That piece had such a great response, and I enjoyed it so much, that we decided to do a fuller collection including knitting AND crochet kits for all levels of knitting- from beginner to advanced.
What are your top picks from this collection?
It’s hard to pick a favorite from this collection because I love them all so much. I love the Mikey Sweater kit and I am also very proud of the Best Friend Cropped Sweater- that’s a design I debuted on Instagram- designed especially for my bestie. Also from my Instagram, I LOVE the Sparkle Raglan Sweater and it gets a lot of compliments when I wear it.
Why do you love this craft so much?
Knitting is part of my self care routine and striking a balance – especially when I’m on a hectic shooting schedule. Knitting also helps me stay creative and in the moment. When I was writing my novel Bonfire, if I got stuck I would just relax and knit for a while or it would be my treat at the end of a long writing day.
