Living in London Like A Local: Cuckooz

By Daniela Christiansson

I love London. The diversity of the people, the huge open parks, and the palpable buzz make this city a favourite for many travellers. The thing is, it’s such a sprawling metropolis full of so many corporate hotels that it’s hard to feel truly at home here. But now, a new concept in tourism has arrived to make you feel like a local, and I was lucky enough to check it out.

Cuckooz isn’t like your usual hotel at all. It provides stunning, spacious apartments in the heart of London’s bustling East End, providing an irresistible mix of old and new. For example, the East End is home to a flower market that started in 1869 and is still going strong, and trendy pop up bars and restaurants, galleries and boutiques. There’s certainly plenty to do in this part of the city, but these high-end but stylish apartments are so cozy and packed with works by wonderful local artists such as Libby Needham and Joe Gamble and furnished by designers like Flock Studio and GrahamMade, you may not want to leave!

My flat – because it’s seriously not a ‘room’ – was super spacious and sunny, making me feel at home right away. But if you come with friends, husbands or family, you can book anything from a 1 bedroom to a duplex penthouse suites, all with large terraces overlooking the London skyline. All the apartments host fully equipped kitchens and bathrooms. I loved the fluffy towels and bathrobes! Super cozy. Curated by interior designer duo The Two Lovely Gays, the design is timeless and chic, with an edge. A bit like London, you could say!

It’s all in the detail at Cuckooz, from the unusual art adorning the walls to the chosen books available for you to read on the  bookshelves, the lush, living plants, the bed linen, the knives and forks to the triple-glazing to ensure a deep and dreamy sleep in the seriously comfy beds.

And it’s more sustainable than a hotel, too. Gorgeous toiletries by Bamford Organics are provided in the bathrooms, and when you arrive, there are some local artisan beers waiting for you in the fridge. Like a local, you can use Kennedy City Bicycles instead of taxis or Ubers to get around the city, and instead of a house gym, you can use the  uber trendy East London gym BLOK, all included in your room price. Forget wasteful takeaway – the local fruit and veg market provided a bounty of goodness I was excited to cook up in my very own kitchen, ensuring I ate super-healthy food while I was travelling (something I rarely do, and was glad for!) In short, every detail is considered to ensure you live as local as possible on your London City break.

In case you feel a bit lost in London, never fear: the Cuckooz concierge team know the local area inside and out and are working on creating the best local city guide ‘C-Z’ for the contemporary traveller. But of course, they are happy to answer any questions you may have and help you make your stay in London the best city break ever. I know mine was!
