It started out as a bit of a cult movement, with only health food stores covering them. But eventually, clean makeup brands got picked up by the likes of Net-a-Porter, Selfridges and other huge department stores. It took awhile for that bastion of all things beauty, Sephora, to finally get on board, but today, you can also find clean makeup and skincare brands even there.
According to the megastore, all Clean At Sephora Makeup Brands are free of the following ingredients: sulfates SLS and SLES, parabens, formaldehydes, formaldehyde-releasing agents, phthalates, mineral oil, retinyl palmitate, oxybenzone, coal tar, hydroquinone, triclosan, and triclocarban. Plus, all skincare, makeup and hair brands with the Sephora Clean seal have less than one percent synthetic fragrances. Pretty good, right?
Yet some are still dubious about clean makeup brands – they wonder if their pigments really last, and believe (incorrectly) that the array of colours is limited.
Here, I’ve selected some of the best Clean At Sephora Makeup Brands, and have chosen a hero product or two I’ve tried and tested myself – I can attest that the colour is strong and the product lasts!
1. Josie Maran
This brand, launched by former model Josie Maran, is famous for using a ton of Argan oil in its products, which is great – it’s super hydrating and nourishing, not to mention natural.
Hero product: If, like me, you’re plagued with dark circles under the eyes, you’ll love the Argan Creamy Concealer Pencil. It’s a chubby pencil that gives great coverage, and the Argan oil content ensures the delicate skin under the eyes stays hydrated. Plus, it sharpens itself every time you turn it!
Vegan? Nope, some products have beeswax
2. Ilia Beauty
This well-crafted beauty brand uses a load of organic ingredients and mineral pigments to create professional-level products that are renowned for their staying power, skin-nourishing abilities and incredible range of colours.
Hero products: There are a ton of them….I love Ilia’s In My Room lipstick – a great neutral shade that suits all skin tones! I also adore their cucumber hydration stick. Their Sheer Vivid Tinted Moisturiser not only makes your complexion look super even, but it also contains an SPF of 20. It’s a semi-matte formula that suits all skin types, and it’s packed with soothing botanicals designed to help calm and revitalise the skin.
3. RMS Beauty
RMS are the initials of Rosie Marie Smith, a makeup artist who, after growing tired of painting her client’s faces with toxic garbage, created her own clean makeup range, which is now packed with organic, raw, food-grade ingredients.
Founded by a French makeup artist who now resides in the USA, most of Antonym’s cruelty-free, naturally pigmented products are produced in Europe, where ingredients standards are amongst the highest in the world.
Hero products: The label is well known for its vegan makeup brushes, and its certified organic ‘baked’ blushers, which give professional, long-lasting cream-to-powder colour to your face.
Vegan? Nope, some products have beeswax.
5. Lilah B
Believing that “with less, you are more,” makeup brand Lilah B. is all about creating a polished look with fewer products. Inspired by a California philosophy of health and beauty, its founder, Cheryl Yannotti Foland, only creates products that are minimal, chic and nourishing.
Hero products: Awaken and revitalize a dull complexion with their Flawless Finish Foundations, a luxurious, whipped formula that comes in an array of shades that will improve the look of skin’s texture, tone, brightness, and vitality, while also reducing the look of redness.
The entire Lawless cosmetics range includes products that contain their own ‘Natural AF’ mark, which means they are free of carcinogenic, toxic, and hormone-disrupting ingredients.
Vegan? We couldn’t find any info on this.
Axiology is all about the natural lipsticks! They come packaged in a luxurious gold pop-up tubes and apply really smoothly, with plenty of moisturising power. Their external packaging is eco-friendly, too: sweet little triangular boxes made of recycled paper from Bali.
Hero products: The natural lip crayons are a cult favourite since they’re ultra-hydrating and allow you to apply lip colour with great precision. They’re only available online!
