There are loads of Clean at Sephora makeup brands now. But which are the best?
By Arwa Lodhi
It started out as a bit of a cult movement, with only health food stores covering them. But eventually, clean makeup brands got picked up by the likes of Net-a-Porter, Selfridges and other huge department stores.
It took awhile for that bastion of all things beauty, Sephora, to finally get on board. But today, you can also find clean makeup and skincare brands even there.
According to the megastore, all Clean At Sephora Makeup Brands are free of the following ingredients:
- sulfates SLS and SLES
- parabens
- formaldehydes
- formaldehyde-releasing agents
- phthalates
- mineral oil
- retinyl palmitate
- oxybenzone
- coal tar
- hydroquinone
- triclosan
- triclocarban.
In addition, all skincare, makeup and hair brands with the Sephora Clean seal have less than one percent synthetic fragrances.
Pretty good, right?
Yet some are still dubious about clean makeup brands. They wonder if their pigments really last, and believe (incorrectly) that they’re more expensive, and the array of colours is limited.
Here, I’ve selected some of the best Clean At Sephora Makeup Brands, and have chosen a hero product or two I’ve tried and tested myself – I can attest that the colour is strong and the product lasts!
7 Of The Best Clean At Sephora Makeup Brands
1. Saie
In a billion dollar industry where not all products are made with our health in mind, we’re glad more brands such as Saie are bridging the gap between clean beauty and high-performing products.
All their beauty products are designed with sustainable packaging and practices in mind, as well as clean, good-for-you ingredients. Saie uses experts to create their formulas, using industry secrets to make products that will please beauty fans everywhere.
Hero product: If you’re wanting a healthy glow to skin, Saie’s Glowy Gel Illuminator is perfect! I’m also a big fan of the Sunvisor Radiant Moisturizing Face Sunscreen for adding some colour while protecting skin from ageing.
Vegan? Most products are vegan, except for some that use beeswax.
2. Ilia Beauty
One of the best clean at Sephora makeup brands is undoubtedly Ilia Beauty. This well-crafted beauty brand uses a load of organic ingredients and mineral pigments to create professional-level products that are renowned for their staying power, skin-nourishing abilities and incredible range of colours.
Hero products: There are a ton of them! I love Ilia’s In My Room lipstick. It’s a great neutral shade that suits all skin tones. I also adore their cucumber hydration stick. Their Sheer Vivid Tinted Moisturiser not only makes your complexion look super even, but it also contains an SPF of 20. It’s a semi-matte formula that suits all skin types. Plus, it’s packed with soothing botanicals designed to help calm and revitalise the skin.
Vegan? Yes
3. LYS Beauty
The founder of this brand has 15 years of experience working in the clean beauty industry, so she’s all too aware of the greenwashing that can surround it, but LYS Beauty is a brand that is bringing the receipts for each of their products!
Proudly a Sephora Clean Brand, you can be confident each product is formulated without parabens, talc, sulfates, fragrances, phthalates, mineral oils, formaldehyde and much more.
Hero products: The Triple Fix Serum Foundation is available in multiple skin shades and helps your skin to look and feel great while giving great coverage.
Vegan? Yep, they’re proud to be vegan and cruelty-free!
4. Tower 28
Tower 28 is all about having fun with makeup while keeping it 100% free of cruelty and toxins! Sensitive skin is the focus of each and every product, wanting to create skincare that everybody can use. Therefore, each formula is supported by dermatologists, allergists and leading skin experts, and Tower 28 adheres to the highest standards for gentleness, effectiveness and safety. So, each product will really help you to feel as good as the product looks!
Hero products: You’ve got to love the Clean ShineOn Jelly Lip Gloss for juicy looking lips! The Swipe All-Over Hydrating Serum Concealer is great for concealing blemishes while giving skin a gorgeous glow.
Vegan? Yes, the brand is 100% vegan and cruelty-free.
5. Kosas Cosmetics
Not all makeup leaves your skin looking and feeling good, but all Kosas products have been crafted using nourishing ingredients that bring real benefits to your skin. They regularly test their products and use ingredients that support all skin sensitivities.
They have banned over 2,700 ingredients and formulate their products without parabens, talc, synthetic fragrances, phthalates, SLS and much more. That is what we can truly call clean beauty!
Hero products: Blush is Life is a talc-free blush that gives skin a really healthy glow. The Air Brow has a wonderful lamination effect, and will have your brows officially on fleek!
Vegan? Kosas is not fully vegan, but most of their products are vegan. They are leaping bunny certified though, and never test on animals.
6. Lawless
The entire Lawless cosmetics range includes products that contain their own ‘Natural AF’ mark, which means they are free of carcinogenic, toxic, and hormone-disrupting ingredients. This is one of the best clean at Sephora makeup brands for huge lipstick lovers!
Hero products: In a world of filler, ditch the toxic ingredients and enhance what you naturally have with their aptly named Forget The Filler Lip Plumper gloss.
Vegan? Yes!
7. Milk Makeup
This vegan makeup brand is also cruelty-free and void of the worst of nasties, including parabens. But there’s more to love about NYC based Milk, too! For one, their natural lipsticks! These are chubby sticks that double up as blushers. Yep, that’s right: two products in one. Meaning, of course, you’re going to save on plastics and packaging.
Hero products: Their Hydro Grip Setting Spray is pretty famous, and with good reason. This is an alcohol-free, dual-phase setting and refreshing spray that sets makeup for up to 12 hours. But it doesn’t stop there! It also hydrates skin, and provides a visible, breathable, glossy glow.
Vegan? Yep! 100%
