10 Of The Best Vegan Gummies For Your Health

Dry hair? Dull skin? Missing out on vitamins B12 or D? These vegan gummies can help!

By Lora O’Brien

Are you seriously even vegan if someone hasn’t asked where every single one of your vitamins and nutrients comes from? Sigh….

While many believe a vegan diet will have you deficient in almost everything, the truth is actually the opposite. Well, usually, anyway. Sure, there are those vegans who basically live on pasta, fries and cereal. Not good! But it’s really easy to cover your daily nutritional needs with vegan diet alone, if you pay attention to what you’re eating.

But there are some things vegans can never get from food. Namely, vitamin B12. And in the winter, vitamin D. Vegans should also check that they’re getting enough iron and Omega-3 oils as well. Plus, many of us are super busy, and ensuring all our nutritional needs are met daily can be difficult, whether you’re vegan or not. But never fear: vitamin supplements are a great way to ensure your specific needs are being met. And gummies are the tastiest supps around!

Why most gummies aren’t vegan

Whether you’re a parent of vegan children who are picky eaters, or you’re an adult who finds swallowing tablets difficult, gummies are an easy way to chew, quite literally, your vitamins!

However, most gummy vitamins contain gelatin, which of course, is not vegan-friendly. Gelatin is made from unpalatable parts of animals, such as their bones and hooves. Definitely not something you want to ingest if you’re vegan. Or even vegetarian, for that matter! Gelatin isn’t just found in gummy vitamins though. It’s very often the main ingredient of vitamin capsules, too.

Ingredients to avoid

Gelatin aside, there are some other ingredients that you’ll want to avoid when it comes to choosing your vitamin brand.

Collagen: similar to gelatin, collagen is a protein that is extracted from the connective tissue, skin, tendons, bones and cartilage from various animals such as cows, pigs, horses or fish. Gross!

Fish or cod liver oil: I mean, this one is pretty obvious. But if you’re looking to boost your Omega 3, you’ll want to scan the ingredients list for fish oil.

Lactose: this is often used as a filler ingredient, so make sure the brand you use is lactose-free. This is especially important for those with a dairy allergy or intolerance who need to be vigilant, too.

Vitamin D3: this one is a little shocking, but vitamin D can oftentimes be sourced from none other than sheep’s wool. I know, right? I mean, what the heck? Unless your vitamin D specifies that it has come from a plant source, you may want to leave it on the shelf.

Glucosamine and Chondroitin: this is a horrid duo that often works together to enhance joint health. We’d rather let the shellfish and sharks that they come from stay in the sea where they belong.

Luckily, there are plenty of vegan gummies that contain none of the above. Here are some of my favourites!
