12 Steps to A Vegan Makeup Look: Alicia Silverstone

By Tahira Herold

We love Alicia Silverstone not only for her iconic role as ‘Cher’ in Clueless, but also for her commitment to an eco lifestyle. The woman is a PETA spokesperson, lives in an eco friendly home complete with solar panels and organic garden, rescues dogs, ensures her whole family is 100% vegan, and loves promoting natural lifestyles on her blog, in her books, and on social media. Whoa, right?

In her latest film: ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid: the long haul,‘ Alicia insisted her makeup artist used only fully vegan and cruelty-free makeup to create her look. Not only did the makeup hold up to the pressures of a long shooting day, but they made her look radiant throughout! Here’s the lowdown on  how to get the vegan makeup look Alicia rocked in the film.

Step 1: Skin Prep

Begin by prepping your skin thoroughly with Honua Skincare, a beautiful vegan skincare line made from traditional Hawaiian ingredients like Hawaiian salt and wild Pacific seaweed. Massage the  Pa’akai Cleansing Cream into your skin and add a little water to emulsify before rinsing. Then spray 2-3 pumps of the Hawaiian Beauty Water onto a cotton pad and swipe all over your face and chest to refresh skin and remove dead skin cells thanks to the papaya enzymes and locally harvested hibiscus.

Step 2: Tools at the ready

For any good makeup look, you’ll be needing a nice set of brushes. Whilst some brush brands are using mink and badger hair, luckily, there are more and more cruelty-free makeup tools that ensure a flawless makeup application. For example,  M.O.T.D  Cosmetics  has a complete array of face and eye brushes, which come in their own lovely little (vegan leather) bag.

Step 3: Concealer

This creamy concealer by Nu Evolution has neutral undertones and can be built up from medium to full coverage. Alicia used it during filming to keep her skin flawless even in HD! It comes in 5 shades from Fair to Medium Dark; just apply with a brush then blend with a sponge or even your fingers.

Step 4: Bronze it up!

This perfect bronzer by 100% Pure works for fair skin to give a natural look without any orange undertones. The finely crushed minerals provide a gentle golden glow great to pair with a pink cheek.   For darker skin tones try slightly deeper Cocoa Glow – just dust the bronzer to the tops of your cheeks and a little dab on the bridge of your nose will give a bit more of a sun-kissed effect.

Step 5: Eye Shadow

This beautifully soft palette by Dr Hauschka is perfect for enhancing natural beauty with gentle pink and nude tones and a soft matte/ light shimmer finish. Start with the cocoa shade on the outer part of the lid, then blend the cinnamon hue in from the corner of the eye outward. Use the almond shade to highlight the brow bone. Blend well!

Step 6: Brow Grooming

Define  your eyebrows using this handy kit by Lily Lilo. Available in 3 colours, this eyebrow set contains a pressed mineral shadow to fill in any gaps and a natural wax to hold the hairs in place. Use a fine brush to paint it on, then use your fingers to pat a bit of the wax onto brows to keep them groomed.

Step 7: Mascara

Use a  nourishing mineral mascara infused with coconut oil to lengthen and strengthen your lashes. Start with an eyelash curler; squeeze a few times then apply Pacifica Beauty Natural Minerals Stellar Gaze in black, but you can also try brown for a softer look or even in a water resistant formula.  Pro  Tip: Wiggle the mascara wand out from root to tip as you apply the mascara for a lash thickening effect.

Step 8:  Finishing Powder

Hynt Beauty’s finely milled Finishing Powder can be used on its own to mattify and colour correct, or over makeup to set your base. Buff the powder in with the flat-top cruelty-free brush included in the kit. Finale Powder comes in 3 shades but Translucent Pearl works on all skin tones.

Step 9: Lipstick

Ilia lipsticks are packed with nourishing oils and are 80% organic. Conveniently packaged, try Call Me for a happy pink tone, Come Undone for a modern nude shade, or Nobody’s Baby for a nice neutral. Pair it with a lip gloss for a more glam look.

Step 10: Gloss

Vegan Brand Hush + Dotti make beautiful organic, vegan-friendly makeup to go with their skincare. Their lipgloss in Connie is a rich honey caramel colour that complements all skin tones which can be used alone or to enhance a lipstick. The long-wearing formula is sheer without being sticky.
