Want to make money from buying and selling vintage clothing? You need to know the designer brands with the best resale value, first!
By Diane Small
When does buying and selling vintage clothing go from a good idea to a great idea? When you can actually make money from it!
It’s always a good idea to donate clothes and accessories you no longer use. And renting out some of your pricier pieces can be a nice side hustle. In fact, fashion buying, selling and renting has become more and more popular in the past few years. And Gen Z and millennial shoppers say keeping fashion circular is a high priority for them.
But the best part of this sustainable fashion economy is that it can actually be highly profitable! I personally have rented out everything from Stella McCartney shoes and Prada jackets to Loewe handbags and Chanel jewellery. And I made some good money doing so! Sure, it requires some initial investment. But what enterprise doesn’t?
Here below, I’d like to share some research I’ve done about making money from designer fashion brands with the highest resale value. Some of this information comes from Catherine B, a longtime friend of Eluxe and a true specialist in Hermes and Chanel. More research comes from the Real Real Consignment Report for 2022. And some of it is just based on my own experience.
The Big Five
According to Catherine B, there are five designer brands who always have the best resale value. Probably unsurprisingly, these are:
- Louis Vuitton
- Gucci
- Prada
- Chanel
- Hermes.
If you want your designer items to sell well, of course, they should be in good condition. But that’s not all! Their value will rise further if you keep boxes, bags, dust bags, and even original receipts.
In addition, if you have unusual or more rare designer goods, their value is likely to be higher. For example, the world’s most expensive Hermes bag wasn’t a typical black leather Birkin bag. It was actually a Birkin 20 in Vert D’eau Matte Alligator in more structured Sellier with Gold Hardware. Not your average bag!
The Designer Fashion Items Most In Demand
- Fendi Baguette bags
- Tiffany branded jewellery
- Louis Vuitton Multicolore bags
Millennials most likely to sell designer goods as a side hustle. And Gen Xers most likely to sell for sustainability and to keep the economy circular.

Also Know What’s Not Selling
- Tori Burch
- Michael Kors
- Kate Spade.
If you’ve got items from the above mentioned designers, you might just want to peddle them on eBay or even give them away to a thrift shop. That’s because most consignment stores, like 1stDibs or Vestiere Collective, won’t give you a great price for them.
Investing In Jewellery Can Be A Great Move
Finally, if you really want to earn some cash, or make a great investment, you need to know the designer jewellery brands with the best resell value. That’s because certain vintage watches and jewellery brands often sell for more money than they would when new.
The best example? Chanel vintage necklaces sell for almost 700x their original price, and vintage Rolexes sell for almost 300x the original price. As mentioned above, branded Tiffany jewellery is currently really popular and will sell for over the price of most newer pieces.
There are a lot of good reasons to invest in designer jewellery instead of clothing or accessories, too. For example, unlike handbags, their material won’t deteriorate, stain or get nicks and cuts. And unlike fashion, jewellery is almost always classic in style.
So what are you waiting for? Now that you know the top designer brands with the best resale value, save up, make an investment, then learn how to sell your vintage pieces for the best price. It’s a far better idea than letting your cash languish away in a zero interest bank account!
