5 Makeup Trends To Try During Quarantine

Bored? Want to master your makeup? We’ve got 5 makeup trends to try during lockdown!

By Mayela Vazquez

My days during quarantine have been a combo of everything, from getting out of my comfort zone and learning all sorts of cooking recipes, deep cleaning, rearranging my apartment (over and over again) , decluttering my vanity, to trying online classes and workouts in every corner of my New York home. I’ve been as creative as I could ever possibly be.

And since makeup is my one true love, I’ve also spent a lot of time improving my techniques and trying out new trends.

I’ve been up to everything, from experimenting with new products, applying different kinds of lashes, blending shades of different colours, and showing off the results to my friends and family back in Mexico via Zoom.

I think our rather unusual situation presents the ideal opportunity for us all to try to improve our current makeup techniques, or learn how to do something completely new and exciting, like the bang-on-trend graphic eyeliner look, or how to use press on crystals and glitter. Those two looks are highly current, but aren’t so easy to master, and don’t look right on everyone. Now is the time to see how they suit you!

To make things easier for you, I created a list of some of 5 makeup trends to try, and added a few tips and steps you can easily follow.

5 Makeup Trends To Try During Quarantine

5 Makeup Trends To Try

TREND 1 – CONFERENCE STYLE

This is one of the best makeup trends to try for a sleek, sophisticated look that’s perfect for work or events. It also works beautifully for Zoom conferences!

  1. Cleanse and prep your skin using a moisturiser and primer. These steps will help you look flawless and beautiful plus your makeup will last longer throughout the day.
  2. Use a foundation and concealer to colour correct, and smooth out any blemishes or discolorations. Remember to pick a foundation and concealer that best suits your skin type.
  3. Apply translucent powder with a soft round brush to set the foundation and concealer. It is important that you apply this powder especially on the areas where you tend to be oilier.
  4. To contour and define your cheekbones, you can use a matte bronzer.
  5. Use a highlighter on the highest areas of your cheeks for a nice glow.
  6. Choose a peachy or rosy mineral blusher for your cheeks.
  7. Keep it light on the eyes. Add a light brown eyeshadow on your crease for a natural dimension and your highlighter or a shimmery eyeshadow at the center of your eyelids to brighten them up.
  8. Add a coat or two of mascara. I like RMS beauty’s volumising one.
  9. Shape the brows with your favorite product. This step is key to framing your eyes and making them look really amazing! Create small strokes starting on the inner side of the brows and then followed by the middle/arch and tail.
  10. A strong red lipstick finishes the look. Find one that suits your skin tone, but be sure it’s all natural! I recommend using a lip liner for extra definition.

TREND 2 – GLITTERY EYES

This is a bit of fun! Great for dramatic nights out, or for wearing to trendy events, like fashion weeks. First, follow the instructions above for your face and cheeks. Instructions for the eyes are below.

  1. Prep your eyelid with an oil free concealer or an eye primer.
  2. Create a base by applying a light cream eyeshadow or a setting powder on your eyelids.
  3. Choose a non-toxic, non-plastic glitter and start applying a thin coat all over your eyelids. You can blend the glitter in by gently tapping in from center to the inner and outer corner of your eyes.
  4. Choose a second glitter and add it on top but this time focusing on the center, going up towards your crease and the outer corner of your eyes, this will give some dimension.
  5. Get as creative as you want. You can repeat the steps and add some glitter on the bottom lash line and add some rhinestones using lash glue.
  6. Shape the brows with your favorite product. This step is key to frame your eyes and make them look amazing. Create small strokes starting on the inner side of the brows and then followed by the middle/arch and tail.
  7. Now add lipstick. I like this nice, neutral one.
  8. For this look, you can choose not to apply mascara or lashes. It is up to you how far and experimental you want to be.

PRODUCTS I LOVE: Glitterati by Bleach London is a mineral based glitter palette that’s not only vegan friendly and non-toxic, but comes in recyclable cardboard packaging, too!

TREND 3 – GRAPHIC LINER

This is one trend that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere! It’s pretty easy to do. Try it at home to see if it suits you. Why not post a pic of your result on IG? Again, use the face makeup steps in Trend 1 above and them move on to the eye instructions below.

  1. Prep your eyelid with an oil free concealer or an eye primer.
  2. Create a base by applying a light cream eyeshadow or a setting powder on your eyelids.
  3. Start with one statement colour. With a pencil or a gel eyeliner using an angled thin brush, create a line following your upper lash line starting from your outer corner and continuing into your inner corner.
  4. Measure how far you want to go. Take your angled brush or pencil and measure how far you want your liner to be. Measure from the outer edge of your nostril to the outer corner of your eyebrow for a balanced look.
  5. Create a thin diagonal line and then continue by creating a line following your crease. Use a Q-tip to clean the edges or areas around.
  6. Add some coats of mascara. I like RMS beauty’s volumising one.
  7. Shape the brows with your favourite product. This step is key to frame your eyes and make them look amazing. Create small strokes starting on the inner side of the brows and then follow with the middle/arch and tail.
  8. Finish the look with lipstick. I think a dramatic hue like this one best completes this look.

TREND 4 – SMOKEY EYE

A timeless classic that’s great for date nights. It’s one of the makeup trends to try when you have lots of time. It’s highly seductive and sexy, but I’m not gonna lie: it takes a bit of practice to get it right. Take advantage of this time in lockdown to perfect it!

  1. Prep your eyelid with an oil free concealer or an eye primer.
  2. Create a base by applying a light cream eyeshadow or a setting powder on your eyelids.
  3. Start building the colour by using a mauve or taupe eyeshadow all over your lids up to the crease. You can be creative and pick a vibrant color light blue or emerald as well.
  4. Use a darker eyeliner to draw over your lash line starting from the outer corner. Use a liner that is easy to blend and stays in place afterwards. I love Chantecaille’s Luster Glide eyeliner.
  5. Blend and/or gently smudge that liner along the lash line.
  6. Add some glittery or shimmery eyeshadow like this one to add dimension and brightness to your eyes, apply it right at the center of your eyelid. You can use your finger or a wet brush and gently tap the shadow into your lids.
  7. Shape the brows with your favorite product. This step is key to frame your eyes and make them look amazing. Create small strokes starting on the inner side of the brows and then followed by the middle/arch and tail.
  8. Follow your lower lash line with a thin angled brush or eyeliner pencil, softly. Don’t go inside of your waterline unless you want a really dramatic look.
  9. Add some coats of mascara on top and bottom. Try RMS beauty’s volumising one.
  10. Select a nice lipstick in a neutral/nude hue, and define your cheekbones with a matte bronzer

PRODUCTS I LOVE: InVogue makes amazing, vegan-friendly lashes that add drama to any look! They’re hand-tied ethically in Indonesia, and can be used over and over.

TREND 5 – EARTHY TONES

This is one of the best makeup trends to try to get the ideal ‘everyday’ look. It’s subtle, classic, and works on all skin tones. Once again, follow all the face prep steps in Trend 1, then proceed with the eye instructions, below.

  1. Choose a light eyeshadow or shimmer to highlight and brighten up your eyes.
  2. Apply to the center of your eyelids using a blending brush.
  3. To add dimension to your eyes, use a natural shade like one of these and apply it into your crease starting at the outer corner and going in doing circular motions. Your crease has a naturally darker shade than your eyelids already, so the goal is to enhance that shadow a little bit more. Blend the eyeshadow out towards the tale of your brows for a natural finish.
  4. Get an angled thin brush and the same eyeshadow you used for your crease,
  5. Apply a thin line on your lower lash line going from the outer corner towards your inner corner. This line will create the perfect balance and help to achieve a bigger eye effect.
  6. Add coats of mascara. I like to apply it on top and on the bottom. Try RMS beauty’s volumising one.
  7. Now apply lipstick. It should be a nice, neutral hue like this one from Butter London.
