Beauty Self Love Skincare

Natural Collagen Boosting Skincare Products That Actually Work

By Sophia Hussain

The best revenge against time is to age beautifully!  Rather than looking exactly like they did at 20, smart women simply want to maintain a natural, youthful blemish-free, beautiful face – and to eat chocolate too.  The good news is that it’s possible to combat the first signs of premature aging in your 20’s, 30’s, and even your 40’s to help your face age beautifully for your future-self to appreciate and admire.

Signs of aging occur when elastin and collagen, a protein present in all the body’s organs and tissues, degrades over time and causes skin to lose its firmness, which then creates wrinkles. Certain factors, such as genetics, sun exposure, smoking, pollution and an unhealthy lifestyle strongly contribute to tired, wrinkled, older looking skin, and even skin cancer. But following certain anti-aging skincare tips and including anti-aging products that contain collagen into your skincare regime are also of great benefit.

Keeping Your Skin Youthful

Obviously, for example, you should stay out of the sun, which has a powerfully destructive effect on the skin’s cells. Ultraviolet (UV) light damages the fibers in the skin called elastin. When these fibers break down, the skin begins to sag, stretch, and lose its ability to go back into place after moving. The skin also bruises and tears more easily, taking longer to heal. So while sun damage to the skin may not be apparent when you’re young, it will definitely show later in life.

Furthermore, avoid pollution and cigarette smoke at all costs, as these create free radicals which attack the skin and organs. Many hear this term, but are not sure what it means: free radicals are electrically charged atoms or molecules that are known to cause cell damage and have been linked to a variety of health conditions, including heart disease and cancer. A free radical is a molecule that is missing an electron and thus structurally unstable. To gain stability, it interacts with other nearby molecules in healthy cells (such as DNA or airway cell membranes) and plunders them to get what it needs.

The body has a natural defense mechanism against free radicals in the form of antioxidants, substances that are known to have a number of health benefits. Antioxidants can safely interact with free radicals to stop their actions before vital cells are damaged. But the body doesn’t make antioxidants; they must be brought in through skincare products, as well as vitamins found in foods and supplements.

While many mainstream brands on the market claim to help protect skin from the signs of time, many also contain chemicals such as propylene glycol, mineral oil, and TEA, which can actually accelerate signs of ageing in the long run.

According to Dr Sunny Shaper, “collagen based products or supplements are known to thicken hair, improve nail conditions, help fortify the immune system, balance blood sugar and improve sleep cycles. These supplements work more efficiently when paired with vitamin C, as it works in synergy with collagen for a more prevalent results. However, it is important to select one with the highest quality ingredients. If it is poorly absorbed, it will have zero effect.” Dr Shaper also warns that taking collagen supplements or drinks can cause gastrointestinal upset is some people – if that happens to you, keep it topical!

Here, we’ve found the best beauty products and supplements that have been scientifically formulated to help you combat the daily attack on your skin.  Now, put your best face forward as we preview an innovative selection of collagen boosting skincare that really works!

Collagen Boosting Supplements

Beauty starts from the inside out. Avoid white flour, sugar and fried foods, all of which cause inflammation and break down collagen. Instead, eat a balanced diet rich in anti-oxidising superfoods like blueberries, goji berries, and prunes, and lean proteins like white fish, tofu and egg whites. Essential acids, found in salmon, walnuts and flax seed can deliver the fatty acids that make skin plump, while green tea is a great all-round hydrator and free-radical fighter. For an extra boost, try a skin-enhancing supplement. And even chocolate!

Supermood Ego Boost Powder

As part of the aptly named Ego Boost line by Supermood, this collagen boosting powder is packed with fish-derived collagen and  chaga mushrooms, which are filled with collagen boosting antioxidants. Chaga also evens out skin tone and boosts the immune system. The taste of this powder is neutral, with a slight berry undertone, and it mixes effortlessly into shakes, smoothies, juice and tea.

Esthechoc

Causing an international beauty frenzy was created by Cambridge University scientists, Esthechoc is an anti-ageing dark chocolate enriched with potent algae extracts for youthful skin, including astaxanthin which has been proven to stimulate collagen production. Clinical trials showed that with daily consumption, this chocolate  protects the skin from ageing, and contributes to healthy, glowing smooth skin – with visible results in three weeks.

Yllume Ultimate Illuminating Complex

This skin supplement is comprised of what Ylulume call phytoflORAL carotenoids, which claim to protect the skin against UV rays, slow ageing and slow down melanin production, resulting in a more  even, lighter, and brighter skin tone. Together with acai and pomegranate extract, the skin supplement targets damaging free radicals, plumps up the skin, and boosts the production of collagen.  CoQ10 and vitamin C, as well as alpha lipoic acid and BioPerine are also added here to fight signs of ageing.

Tasty Collagen Drinks By Beauty&Go

Collagen drinks, not only improve the health and appearance of the  skin,  but also help strengthen bones and joints and improve the health of hair and nails. Together with its star ingredient, Macro-Antioxidants, Beauty & Go beauty drinks contain bioactive collagen peptides that improve flexibility and help delay the appearance of wrinkles, as well as improving skin texture and overall appearance.

Beauty & Go comes in a wide variety of flavours, from a green detox brew to a fruity raspberry pomegranate cocktail. Our favourite is the rose flavoured red grape and rosehip blend. All the drinks are sugar free (they’re sweetened with pure stevia) and provide not only drinkable collagen and loads of plant based antioxidants, but also 100% of the recommended daily manganese intake to maintain the connective tissue of the dermis and hyaluronic acid, which hydrates and provides elasticity. These  drinks can seriously help delay, reverse and stop the effects of time’s toll  on the skin,  plus they keep your skin hydrated, too!

Antiaging Skincare Products

There’s no doubt that the best way to maintain youthful skin is prevention: avoiding smoke, pollution and sun, and eating quality organic foods to feed the skin the antioxidants it needs. But no matter what you eat or what your genes are like, it is also important to keep the skin hydrated and to protect it from the damage caused by air conditioning and central heating. Whether you’re after a skin boosting serum or a rich, hydrating cream, we’ve found the best organic and natural collagen-boosting products for you.

XYZ Collagen

We all have problem areas that we wish we could wave a magic wand over and watch them disappear, be it crow’s feet or smile lines. So when a cream claims to be able to turn the clock back 7 years in terms of ageing you’re bound to be a little sceptical, right? But the proof is in the extensive praise that this gem of a product has received. The cream uses the power of both science and nature to bring to you a cream that really works by increasing the skin’s natural collagen production. When this happens it lifts, firms and smooths out the skin to visible reduce deep-set lines and wrinkles. And if you think you’re going to have to wait years of continual use to see results, you will be able to see results in just under ninety days!

Eavara Skincare

“My skin has happily devoured this and responded in an unexpectedly impressive way.” “I’ve been searching for a face cream that contains only organic and natural ingredients for a long time, and now that I’ve discovered Eavara my search is over.” Those are just a few of the rave reviews for this cult brand’s products. Eavara’s key ingredient in their collagen boosting skincare range is Plumeria, thought to be the “Tree of Life” due to its healing qualities, but the brand also ensures zero nasties like parabens, SLS, phthalates or fragrances, and they never test on animals.

Antipodes Avocado Pear Oil Night Cream

This rich night cream contains ingredients that boost both Type l and lll collagen and elastin by up to 92%. Not sure what that even means? No worries, let me explain!

Type l Collagen supports younger looking skin, and  decreases as we get older. Type lll collagen is partly responsible for the softness of young skin. In adults, it’s also associated with repair of skin and skin renewal, whilst elastin helps skin maintain elasticity and firmness.

Avocado pear oil, containing antioxidants and  Vitamins E, A, B1, B2, C and D, helps boost collagen and elastin production, plus this night cream has other goodness, such as marigold oil from the petals of the marigold flower, which has been renowned for centuries for its restorative properties. There’s also Manuka honey to soothe and moisten, and the delicious  aroma of sandalwood  to uplift your spirit.

Neal’s Yard Suncare Skin Cream

To maintain beautiful skin, there is one product you seriously cannot do without: sunscreen! Collagen fibres are broken down by the sun, so avoiding its rays is a must for anyone wanting to protect their complexion. This one by Neal’s Yard boasts a natural mineral filter protects skin from sun’s UVA & UVB rays. A deeply nourishing trio of organic tamanu, coconut and rice bran oils is blended with Shea butter and a soothing antioxidant-rich blend of aloe vera, white tea and milk thistle  to further protect skin from free radicals. Wear it daily, whether or not it’s sunny outside: harmful rays can still penetrate through clouds!

Under Eye Care

Skin first starts to age first where it is thinnest–under the eye. Unfortunately, the skin around the eye is also highly exposed to pollution and sun, meaning  it not only needs a deeply hydrating product that can protect this delicate area, but one that has added vitamins, oils and sunblocks that can fight off free radical damage. As the skin here is very sensitive, many products can be irritating. Luckily, we’ve found a selection of organic creams that are just the opposite–these protect and nourish the skin around the eye gently and naturally.

JOIK Eye Contour Cream

The star ingredient here is  rhodiola rosea extract. It strongly protects the skin from environmental damage and improves skin’s defensive barrier function against UV rays, increases collagen and elastin production and helps skin to retain its strength and form no matter what your age.

Arbu Restore Eye Cream

Arbu Restore Eye Cream promises to perk up the delicate skin under and around the eye by using its skin-enhancing formula, which includes concentrations of what you should be eating for good skin: probiotics, pomegranate, green tea and of course, Omega-oil rich caviar. An extra dose of caffeine reduces puffiness. All ingredients are certified organic.

ArbuBlackEye-800

FOM London Eye Contour Cream

This cream works really hard – it helps rid you of dark circles and under eye discoloration, puffiness, fine lines and wrinkles, all whilst drenching your delicate under eye area with botanical antioxidants and a tailor made Adoptogenic Rhodiola Skin Defence Complex designed protect the skin around eyes from ageing. The collagen boost comes from hexapeptides, pentapeptides wrapped up in alkylamides and spilanthes acmella. After time, these ingredients will give the eyes a firmer, more  lifted and fresher look.

Youthful Lips

One of the first signs of ageing are fine lines around the mouth. Lips also become slightly thinner as collagen breaks down, looking less full and luscious. Maintain luscious, plump lips using these fabulous nude hues that create the illusion of fuller lips, but are infused with brilliant natural collagen boosting ingredients too.

Josie Maran Lip Plumping Butter

Argan oil and honey come together to protect your kisser in this highly conditioning lip enhancer. The Argan oil provides powerful antioxidants, vitamin E, and essential fatty acids to help maintain your lips’ collagen, while pure honey seals in moisture, soothes, and enhances barrier recovery. But there’s more: there’s a tiny bit of a sting to this product, which further enhances circulation to the lip, providing an instant plumping  effect while konjac root spheres fill in fine lines and Volulip™–a natural peptide and plant extract blend–visibly volumizes your lips through hyaluronic acid synthesis. What’s not to love?

Korres Mango Butter Lipstick

Lips need protection from the sun, too–after all, they are highly exposed every day! This sheer Natural Pink  lipstick by Korres offers an SPF of 25, which will protect your lips from collagen-destroying sun, as well as hydrating oils and free-radical fighting plant extracts.

I’m a total convert to Made From Earth skin care products. For years I was seduced by the belief the more money I spent the better results I’d get… Wrong! I tweet about High Street fashion & beauty so Made From Earth products caught my eye about a year ago and now I’m a total convert. I have noticed a massive difference to my skin /lips /body and my bank balance as they are brilliantly affordable but seem to use very good ingredients

    Hi,
It’s refreshing to see skincare and skin aging blogs that include care for the lips. I’ve recently noticed fine lines on the side of my mouth, and my lips are getting thinner by the day. I’ll have a go with that Lip Plumping Butter and hope it works for me. Thanks for sharing!

I only use natural products on my face. I am allergic to many ingredients, but I wanted a natural product with collagen AND hyaluronic acid. I now exclusively use the Somaluxe Renewal Serum – it has the collagen and the hyaluronic acid I was looking for, and all natural ingredients This is why I decided to try your product.

It keeps my facial skin soft, pores closed and moisturized. I don’t have any wrinkles anymore , even though I’ m 52.
