Ma Vie en Verte: Beauty Boss Josie Maran

In our exclusive interview, beauty boss Josie Maran talks everything from owls to Argan oils

By Chere Di Boscio

As those who love her makeup may know,  beauty boss Josie Maran is an American model, actress and mamma, as well as the current CEO of Josie Maran Cosmetics, a completely natural makeup and skincare line based strongly on Argan oil, the ‘miracle’ beauty oil from Morocco.

Top products in Josie’s range include her best selling  Whipped Argan Face Butter,  Argan Enlightenment Illuminator and her all natural self tanner.

Long a favourite with celebs, makeup artists and conscious consumers, Josie Maran Cosmetics has become so well known (and well loved!), it’s almost overshadowed Maran’s fame as an actress and model.

Here, in this exclusive interview, Josie shares a bit about her vie en vert with Eluxe, and talks about her love of nocturnal birds, wild beaches and slow-growing trees.

What is the earliest memory you have of being in nature?

Josie Maran: My dad’s always been an athlete, and he used to play catch with me in the park practically before I could walk!

Which natural features of your home town do you most miss?

Josie Maran: I love the narrow streets shaded by huge oak trees in Palo Alto. But I also love the wide trails and narrow streets of my neighbourhood in Los Angeles.

What’s your favourite animal and why?

Josie Maran: The owl. It’s wise and mysterious and beautiful and only hoots when it has something to hoot about.

What’s the most positive thing you do for the environment in your daily life?

Josie Maran: My beauty brand is an ongoing commitment to the environment. By giving women an eco-conscious alternative that doesn’t sacrifice on quality I can help make positive change that extends beyond my personal care routine.

What’s your greatest eco ‘sin’?

Josie Maran: My work schedule requires that I fly back and forth between my home in Hollywood and my farm in Pennsylvania. If I could teleport myself there I would!

What would be your eco-friendly dream travel destination?

Josie Maran: Costa Rica, where there are still wild, unspoiled beaches.

What are your favourite ‘green’ fashion brands?

Josie Maran: I love Alternative Apparel for basics. They use certified cotton, eco-friendly dyes, and fabrics made from recycled materials. On top of that, they practice social responsibility–none of their manufacturers employ children or forced labour.

What about beauty brands? Do you use organic?

Josie Maran: Well I’m pretty loyal to my own brand. My mainstay is my 100% Pure Argan Oil, which is 100% organic.

Which celeb spokesperson for the environment do you most admire, and why?

Josie Maran: I have had the pleasure of working with Ian Somerhalder many times over the years. His foundation aims to empower, educate and collaborate with people and projects to positively impact the planet and its creatures. I so admire his passion and commitment.

How would you like to change your work to be more eco-friendly?

Josie Maran: I continually work to utilize new technologies, ingredients and processes that are more eco-friendly. Fortunately my JMC family is behind me 100% in my drive to constantly improve in this arena.

Which eco issues are most important to you?

Josie Maran: The Moroccan women’s cooperatives we partner with don’t just empower women–they protect the Argan forests. The beautiful Argan tree takes 14 years to bear fruit, which is why their oil is so precious and rare, and their preservation so important for beauty and balance. The co-ops we work with are dedicated to responsible harvesting practices and reforestation projects, which – along with environmental protection policies – keep Argan forests and women’s jobs safe.

How do you think governments can best act to help stop climate change?

Josie Maran: Every powerful woman has to pick her focus, and mine is changing the world and defending the planet through my line of natural cosmetics and our partnerships with organisations that work to empower women.
