The line is made from sustainable materials such as organic cotton and are dyed using a low impact process with certified organic dyes. They also use factory surplus lace fabrics and trims which have been leftover from manufacturing. This helps to reduce waste by using existing fabric which might otherwise be discarded. The line is manufactured in downtown LA and other measures have been taken to reduce the carbon footprint of the brand including using clothing labels made from organic cotton and hang tags from recycled paper.
Svala is owned and operated by Helga Douglas who is originally from Sydney but now lives in LA. The inspiration for Svala’s name comes from Iceland, where her mother is from. Helga has always loved the Icelandic girl’s name Svala, meaning bird or swallow, which has always been considered a symbol of love, hope, freedom and loyalty in many cultures. Svala is inspired by Helga’s affinity for the relaxed, colorful feel of Sydney and LA and the simplicity of Scandinavian design.
