A $250 thermostat has suddenly become the ‘It’ gadget of the day, and with good reason–the Nest thermostat is a a smart device that learns when you wake up, when you go to sleep, and what temperature you like the room during the day, and each time you twist the dial, it remembers and adjusts itself accordingly.
But not only is the Nest smart, it is also beautiful, thanks to designer Tony Fadell, who was also responsible for the clean, intuitive design of a few products you may be familiar with: ever heard of the iPod and iPhone? Unlike the beige, ugly thermostats found in most homes, the Nest is round, domed and its barrel has a mirror finish that reflects your wall. Its screen glows orange when it’s heating, blue when it’s cooling, and a dainty little leaf lets you know when you’re using it in the best way to save energy; it turns itself on when you’re nearby, and discreetly goes dark when nobody’s close.
Perhaps because Fadell is smartphone savvy, he included a key feature to his new baby: the thermostat can be controlled by any smartphone or computer, from anywhere. On holidays for a few weeks somewhere tropical but returning to somewhere freezing after? No need to suffer in a cold house–simply increase the temperature of your home from your smartphone at the airport. Heat blasting all day but nobody’s home? Turn it down from wherever you are. The Nest has WiFi, so it can download software and it can also be programmed from a website.
Obviously, such control of the temperature is an easy and practical way to save on energy bills and reduce your carbon footprint a bit at the same time. In fact, Nest uses smart algorithms to shave off 20% to 30% of energy used for heating, and the $250 price tag should be offset within two years, according to the manufacturers.
