Sexy, Sustainable Swimwear for Summer

By Chiara Spagnoli Gabardi

Funny how when the weather gets hotter, so do your clothes! No matter if you’re a guy or a girl, donning swimwear makes us feel sexy, summery and of course, a lot cooler. But given that most bathing suit brands are made from nylon, Spandex and other artificial fibres, many an eco-minded guy or gal is left with a moral dilemma: what to buy?

Never fear! Eluxe has selected the top sustainable swimwear for the summer of ’14.

Love Brand&Co.

Founded in 2011 by London eco-conscious and entrepreneur Oliver Tomalin, Love Brand & Co have just released their first ever women’s bikini collection, featuring classic cuts and timeless style. Love Brand & Co. is known for creating fashion ‘for the love of elephants’ because part of the profits generated by the label go into elephant conservation.

The new women’s line includes a selection of 6 block colours in line with the label’s philosophy of state-of-the-art eco fabrics, but key to this range is the  ‘mix and match’ concept, which came as “a direct response to every woman I know telling me this is what they want and can’t find”, according to founder Tomalin.

Love Brand&Co. have used South African singing sensation Gina Kushka as the face of its first Women’s Collection. Being the face (or body!) of the brand was a “no-brainer” for Gina: “I feel very honoured to be the first face of the Women Collection. Being brought up in Africa, the conservation and care for animals has been a huge part of my life since birth, so this partnership feels like it was fate!” she says.

Koru  Swimwear

The environmentally friendly and Florida based swimwear line was created by designers Julie Brockmeyer Stine and April Slater, who wanted to incorporate eco-friendly fabrics and responsible textile manufacturing processes to swimwear for both sport and leisure. The outcome was a classy bikini collection that pays homage to New Zealand–considered one of the most environmentally responsible countries on the planet.

Everything that goes into the Koru production is with an eco-minded approach, and recently the brand announced a new partnership with the non-profit organisation Healthy Seas, which pursues two goals: to remove waste from the oceans and reutilise it to make textiles and fabrics. Furthermore, Koru Swimwear is now donating one percent of their profits directly to Healthy Seas and is also a member of 1% for the Planet.

Designer Vanessa Rivers is a fond advocate of sustainability and chooses to teach to future generations the responsibility to protect the Earth through her whimsical fun, flirty and affordable swimsuits. They are entirely made in the USA with a new advanced sustainable techno-fabric: Econyl, a 100% regenerated polyamide fibre made from pre and post-consumer materials, which is luxuriously soft and very durable, offering a wide range of benefits that are set to revolutionise the swimwear industry.

Vitamin A  Beach Wear

Designer Amahlia Stevens chose her swimwear’s motto pertinently: “This is no ordinary bikini.” Indeed it isn’t. Vitamin A is made up of seams that lie flat against the skin and make “the fit hip-slimming, bust-boosting, to figure-flattering perfection.”

Stevens finds inspiration in various fields: travel, modern art, and the cult of global style-setters who collect the brand’s designs, such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Miranda Kerr, Jessica Alba, and Halle Berry.

The resort wardrobe, currently includes the Little Black Bikini, just as essential as the little black dress. The modernist aesthetic blends smoothly with sustainability, giving life to the spirit of Vitamin A.
