We always loved Atelier Swarovski for the fact that it makes man-made crystals that shine as brilliantly as gemstones – but without the unethical mining. Now, the Atelier reaffirms its commitment to conscious luxury with its latest fine jewellery collection, made from Swarovski-Created Diamonds and Fairtrade gold.
The Fairtrade Gold in the collection comes from the Minera Limata Limitada co-operative in Peru. The co-operative’s 31 members mine Fairtrade gold under challenging conditions at an altitude of 4600 meters above sea level. Most workers traditionally earn a living by breeding alpaca, but now, mining gold provides them with an additional source of income to help them improve their livelihoods.
The Fairtrade Foundation is an independent certification body and NGO which licenses the use of the Fairtrade mark on more than 5,000 products which meet its rigorous social, economic and environmental standards. This independent label signifies to consumers that farmers and workers across 75 developing countries are getting a better deal from trade, and aims to end poverty through trade.
Fairtrade Gold offers many benefits to miners, such as regular working hours and health protection. Abusive child labor and forced labour are prohibited, and compliance with national environmental laws is strictly controlled.
Beyond certification, the Fairtrade Foundation is deepening its impact by delivering specialist programmes to help disadvantaged communities boost productivity in the face of challenges such as climate change.
As a Fairtrade cooperative, Limata pays special attention to protecting both people and the environment. In addition to the market price, miners receive a Fairtrade Premium of $ 2,000 per kilo of pure gold. The premium finances projects to improve the sustainability of the production and development projects that benefit the entire community. The members of the cooperative decide independently and democratically how the Fairtrade Premium will be used.
This special Swarovsky Fairtrade gold collection includes rings, bracelets and earrings featuring dazzling diamonds surrounding lab-grown sky-blue, sapphire and azul crystals, beautifully showcased in ethical, Fairtrade gold. Swarovski Created Diamonds, which are lab-grown and then precision cut by Swarovski’s master cutters, have the same exceptional qualities as mined diamonds but are widely accepted to have less impact on the natural world.
