Do you love shiny, pretty things?
Stunning jewelry brand Stefano Navi deals exclusively with sustainable lab-created diamonds, and makes bespoke pieces from them that can be passed down through the generations.
You start out by choosing a setting. With Stefano Navi you can either choose a setting, pick from their selection of lab-grown diamonds, and order – without the need for a sketch artist consultation. OR you can contact them and meet with a sketch artist to make the entire ring unique and customised to your liking.
In case you’re unsure, lab-created diamonds are diamonds in every way. They have exactly the same brilliance, sparkle, chemical composition and lustre as mined diamonds – but they’re far more eco-friendly. Think of it this way: mined diamonds are like fruits grown outdoors, while lab-created diamonds are like fruits grown in a greenhouse.
‘Outdoor’ diamonds are created when high pressures and temperatures transform carbon in the Earth’s mantle into its gemstone form, which is then mined using heavy machinery. Lab-grown diamonds are made in a ‘greenhouse’, but the final product is identical.
Lab diamonds can be grown in various methods. The 2 most common are CVD and HPHT. Here’s how they work.
A Diamond Is Born
CVD- Chemical Vapor Deposition
A small diamond seed is placed in a chamber filled with a hydrocarbon gas, typically methane. The gas is heated to 1,400 degrees Fahrenheit, and powerful microwaves are used to break the bonds in the methane. The free carbon begins to stick to the diamond seed, slowly growing the diamond crystal structure.
HPHT- High pressure high temperature
A small diamond seed is placed in a bed of carbon material like graphite. The carbon is then compressed to over 1 million pounds per square inch, or 70,000 times the atmospheric pressure at sea level. This pressurized environment is then heated to 2,700 degrees Fahrenheit. This extreme environment melts the carbon around the diamond seed which is then cooled to crystallize into a new lab-grown diamond.
Lab grown diamonds are better for the environment than earth mined diamonds. Diamonds grown in a lab require significantly less water, generate less carbon emissions, and do not disturb the plant and animal life nearly as much as a mined diamond. The Diamond mining industry has also been involved in conflicts, and while initiatives are in place to mitigate that man-made diamonds bypass conflict altogether.
Stefano Navi have also created a unique service for brides to be: their signature home try-on kit. This is a box of their six most popular shapes, ranging from 1 to 2 carats. These engagement ring replicas of their classic Audrey setting come in all three colours of imitation gold: white, yellow, and rose. That way, you can see which colour looks best against your skin, and which size is perfect for you. You have up to five days to try on these samples and determine your preferred specifications.
