WIN A Coat Worth Over 0 From English Utopia

By Chiara Spagnoli Gabardi

At Eluxe Magazine, we’ve been following sustainable fashion for years, analyzing the plight of established or fledgeling couturiers who were bringing more clothes on the market, whilst trying to diminish their impact on the planet. But some say that there is no such thing as sustainable fashion…they consider it some sort of utopia. But it is the very aspiration to utopia in fashion that has inspired one particular brand from Great Britain.

York-based English Utopia, is the quintessentially English coat and jacket maker, that brings an ethical approach to staple pieces. Founder Gary Newbold, who is the former Chief Designer at Barbour, has created his own side of fashion paradise. If you stroll down a snicket in Bootham, in the heart of the medieval city of York, you shall find his workshop. Here is where he started his own label, reviving English craftsmanship, eight years ago in 2012.

He works with raw materials, conveying rational British values, but giving them a contemporary twist. Gary is very hands on, as he designs and cuts each piece himself, before handing the work to one of his ‘make through’ coat makers and seamstresses. “It’s a more expensive way of doing it, but we prefer one craftsperson to make one full product. They get a great deal of pride from their work in this way. We have a great team and any of them would get a job in a Parisian atelier.” he says.

His coats cater both men and women, and are made with the finest quality Tweed, Cotton, Leather and Cashmere from a select few countries including UK, Austria, France, and Italy.  These fabrics are sourced in top-notch mills, to ensure transparency and traceability for all of English Utopia’s products.

The logo of the brand echoes the spirit of freedom and independence of its founder, since the hot-air balloon evokes the desire to roam across the world in a vehicle that has minimal impact on the environment. By wearing one of English Utopia’s marvelous coats, you will be protected in all kinds of weathers, in great style, no matter where you go.

Whether it’s the black Piper jacket with the collar, the Havelock, the Robin Hood, or the Titania, each garment made by English Utopia will give a distinguished air to the gentlemen, and charm to the ladies.

English Utopia would like to offer one beautifully lined coat to one lucky reader of Eluxe! It is perfect for a memorable Christmas gift, or the ideal winter coat for yourself, for years to come.
