LaBante London is proud to say they’re a vegan bag brand born out of a love for animals, fashion and the planet. As a child, founder Vanita grew up surrounded by fashion, since her uncle owned a garment making company. She learned the value of quality stitching, practical design and superb materials. But being young and ambitious, she first decided to try her hand at banking for a career.
It was high-powered and exciting, and working in that environment, she became acutely aware of the fact that men flaunted their status with fine suits and watches, whilst for women, this was demonstrated through ‘status’ handbags, like Birkins, 2.55s and Speedys. But as a lover of animals, she wasn’t comfortable buying leather bags – no matter how much prestige they connotated.
We all have our own reasons for going vegan, and our own stories about the time it dawned on us that killing animals for food and fashion is just wrong. For Vanita, it was when she was a university student. She used to pass a butcher’s shop where animals were kept alive and caged before being killed in front of customers for their meat. It was horrific and pretty heartbreaking, and transformed how she ate and shopped forever.
Vanita searched and searched for a luxury handbag she could take to work. One that said ‘quality’ and ‘power’ and ‘elegance’ – but one that was also cruelty free. Finding nothing that satisfied her needs, she realised there was a huge gap in the market for vegan power handbags, and in 2009 LaBante was born..
What Does Quality Mean?
Working in the City, Vanita became used to seeing and wearing high quality luxury goods, and it was also important to her to translate that into the accessory line she was creating. But what defines luxury in a handbag?
While some are happy to simply tote around any accessory stamped with a brand name (even if the bag is counterfeit), true luxury lovers can spot a fake a mile away, and know what constitutes quality.
For Vanita, ‘the Devil is in the details’ – this means that the number of stitches per square inch in her handbags is the same as many of the world’s most expensive handbags. She also believes that properly weighty chains and solid hardware make the difference between a regular vs a luxury bag, and that’s why LaBante vegan bags feature hardware that’s built to last.
Vanita also insists on using the finest vegan leather – in other words, a material that’s built for wear and tear, and that’s guaranteed not to fall apart after a few years of use like cheaper vegan handbags are prone to doing. We love how she elegantly places her logo, stamped discreetly on this ‘leather’.
LaBante isn’t just animal friendly, but is eco-friendly, too: the brand uses recycled polyester for the interiors of all their handbags and dustbags, and all their paper swing tags are made of recycled as well as recyclable paper. LaBante also makes sunglasses, which are crafted from 100% recycled wood and are packaged in bamboo.
The range of LaBante vegan bags includes sweet satchels, comfy totes, sophisticated clutches, and even professional laptop bags.
