What would you do if you were stuck in bed for months on end?
British designer Kerry Clayton found herself in this situation after she injured her back. She imagined doing something creative that would make a difference, and dreamt up TT’s Studio.
The small company handmakes lightweight earrings that are easy to wear every day. Inspired by her friend Rachel, the blogger behind Style Yourself Sustainable, Kerry decided it would be best to find a sustainable vegan material that came in different colours and patterns. She was adamant that this vegan leather not contain any PVC or PU, which she considers to be harmful for the environment.
After searching around for different options, she finally became hooked on cork based vegan leather.
Cork fabric is produced in Portugal from thin cork shavings obtained directly from the bark of the cork oak tree every 7-9 years from skilled labour men without damaging the trunk. The bark then grows back and is reharvested making it truly sustainable.
This fabric is hand cut by Kerry into earrings with either sterling silver or gold plated hooks. The jewellery is then packaged in recyclable cardboard envelopes made by another small business.
Today, TT’s Studio now specialises in making PeTA approved vegan cork leather earrings in a range of styles, textures and colours. They are soft to touch, durable, easy to clean, hypoallergenic, dust, dirt and grease repellent – and they look wonderful on any face shape or size!
With styles ranging from leopard print, fuschia and teal to a more subtle black, white, or nude, there’s a pair to go with every outfit. Currently, there are three teardrop sizes, bars and diamond shapes available, but Kerry is working on new styles regularly.
She would like to offer one lucky Eluxe reader the chance to win a new pair of earrings for every month of the year, for twelve months! This is the perfect opportunity for the ethical jewellery addict, or you can also keep some pairs to gift to the favourite people in your life.
