For most of us, the closest we can find in our town to organic beauty stores is pretty much the local health food store, where you’ll find some natural oils and boring body butters. And that’s about it. Otherwise, we’re stuck shopping for beauty products at big department stores that carry those ubiquitous, global brands that are so packed with chemicals, they actually give me (for one, anyway) a nasty headache every time I enter the beauty counter area.
That ´s a real shame, because there’s a growing number of highly luxurious, effective, all-natural and organic skincare and makeup brands out there. But you’re probably thinking: where can I buy them?
Luckily, there are also many more online retailers cropping up who deliver products around the globe. Most products, that is. Thanks to ‘terrorism laws’, we can no longer receive liquids like perfumes or nail polishes from overseas in the post. But never fear: whether you’re after the perfect mascara, an anti-ageing serum, an SLS-free shampoo or any other kind of non-toxic luxury beauty product, you’ll find it online at one of these shops below.
1. Love Lula
Based in: England but delivers internationally
Target Audience: Luxury beauty consumers
Brands: Essential Care, Pai Skincare, Neom, AEOS, NUXE and more
Benefits: The best international selection of niche and luxury certified organic beauty brands, with the added bonus of subscribing to a monthly beauty box sampler program, so you can try before you committing to a full-size version.
Country: USA, Canada
Target Audience: Serious natural beauty lovers
Brands: Cocovit, the Beauty Chef, Dr Alkaitis, Soap Walla and more
Benefits: The best thing about this online store, which also has actual boutiques scattered throughout the USA, is that they are more than happy to send you tons of samples so you can try before you buy!
3. Net a Porter
Country: International but based in USA
Target Audience: Well heeled beautyistas
Brands: Kjaer Weiss, Chantacaille, This Works and more
Benefits: Whilst Net a Porter still carries loads of nasty, chemical ridden cosmetics (Aerin, anyone?), there’s a lot of organic and natural goodness to choose from now, too. Just do a search in their window for ‘organic beauty’ or ‘natural beauty’ and lots of great luxury makeup and skincare brands will come up.
Country: International but based in NYC
Target Audience: Both male and female beauty product lovers – their beauty boxes rock!
Brands: Stop the Water, Trilogy, John Masters and more
Benefits: Birchbox carries both chemical and non-toxic makeup and skincare, and is most famous for its monthly beauty boxes, which is a great way to try before you buy. You can select the products you’d like in your box yourself, by doing a search for ‘organic’ or ‘natural’ in their search window. If you already know your natural beauty products, this is the site for you.
Country: UK but delivers anywhere
Target Audience: The health conscious consumer – food is on offer here, too
Brands: REN, Neal’s Yard, Dr Hauschka, Weleda
Benefits: It’s normally known for its food, but Planet Organic has recently exploded with awesome beauty products too! A wide range of well known brands including Neal’s Yard, Odylique and many more are on offer, as are organic candles and health supplements.
Target Audience: Mainly young women
Brands: Herbivore, Drunk Elephant, Kopari, Ilia and more – not all are natural brands though; beware!
Benefits: Sephora is like Birchbox or Net-a-Porter: it’s not a designated natural beauty site, so you need to search around. If you now which natural brands you want to use, and aren’t too fussed about exactly how natural they are (for example, many point out that Josie Maran and Korres aren’t as pure as they pretend to be), then this is the place for you.
Country: France, but is in English and delivers globally
Target Audience: Chic eco trend setters, those seeking more exotic brands
Selected Brands: Studio 78 Paris, HONORÉ DES PRÉS, Kure Bazaar, World Wild Men, Ren
Benefits: Offers the best luxury organic and natural beauty products, their range also includes eco fashion and lifestyle brands. Being a socially conscious brand, a tree is planted with the purchase of every order.
Based in: Germany, but is in English and delivers globally
