Over the past year, I’ve tried countless beauty products for Eluxe. Some have been, frankly, terrible–one product melted before I could use it; others came with the oils irreparably separated from the other ingredients, forcing me to bin the contents completely.
Others, however, have proven to be true beauty enhancers and skin lifesavers, and I am happy to share my list of what I personally think works best. Note that Eluxe receives no advertising from any of these brands; so our Tried and Tested reviews are as objective as can be, as are my picks for the Best of Natural Beauty 2013, below.
Perfume: Tatiana Terezzi’s Rose Oud scent is top of my list. All natural, this spicy floral blend lasts all day and provokes many compliments.
Skin Cleanser: Tilth beauty makes several good ones that rinse off easily and are all natural. My fave in their range is their Rose Protection Cleansing Gel, which is so gentle on your skin it feels like water, but it manages to deep clean, even so. I also trust AEOS Renewal Gentle Cleansing Lotion, which is also perfect for delicate skins and leaves my face dewy-clean.
Skin Toner: Amala’s Lightening Toner is top of my list for the hopes that it may keep brown sun spots at bay, but I also love the texture and lightness of Savane’s Purifying Rooibos Toner.
Nail Polish: PritiNYC is a long-lasting chem-free brand that comes in an array of trendy colours, all beautifully packaged. Runner up: Malava, for its tiny bottles, mind-boggling variety of shades and its breathable formula.
Body Oil: Neom rose body oil takes the prize here. Featherlight and easily absorbed, it leaves the faintest hint of rose on the skin.
Bath Oil: Again, one of my favourites is Neom Sweet Basil and Lavender for its unique, slightly herbal scent and richness–a drop or two will do! But CheryLin’s Rose Oil offers wonderful bath moisture with a fresh, light single note fragrance.
Skin Cream: CheryLin Skincare makes the best Luxury Rose Night Care balm is my favorite product from the range. Its exquisite rose scent is almost addictive, and applying the balm every evening before going to sleep is a true pleasure. Aromatherapy Associates makes a deeply hydrating product they call an ‘Overnight Repair Mask’, but I use it as a cream whenever I need serious hydration. The product has a slightly sticky texture but it smells of roses and hydrates like nobody’s business.
Body Cream: I absolutely adore Smiths of Jersey Hand and Foot Cream, which smells like a sea breeze and has the texture of the inside of a chocolate truffle, and Bodhi Jasmine Falls body moisturiser, which I wish came in gallon sizes due to its hydrating qualities and marvellously light floral scent.
SPF Cream: It’s hard to find an all natural face cream with SPF, but Evamar provides a wonderful one, with a factor of 25 with its Pure Honey Rich Day Moisturiser. A Must in any handbag!
Face Oil: It’s only recently that I discovered the anti-ageing benefits of these natural oils, and Bodhi’s Neroli Luce not only absorbs quickly, it smells like Mallorca’s orange groves in spring. Savane’s Balancing Face Oil is another top favourite for its rare oils, with strong healing qualities, including Marula, Kalahari Melon and Manketti.
Eye Treatments: I’m absolutely addicted to my Organic Argan Glow roll stick by Moroccan Natural. This baby is a pure oil that rolls on under the eye, giving a wee massage, which is furthered as you gently rub it in. The Argan oil provides long lasting moisture and anti-ageing protection.
Spas: It may not be accessible for all, but the LUX* spa treatments in their properties in the Maldives, Mauritius or Reunion are second to none for perfectly tailored attention to the client’s needs, and for their use of homemade oils and spa therapy products, all of which use 100% natural, locally sourced ingredients. Second runner up is the more ubiquitous Six Senses Spa, which consistently provides a relaxing environment, well-trained staff, and of course, the best of organic and natural beauty products, including Amala and Subtle Energies.
It has been a wonderful year for natural beauty products, and as awareness grows regarding the harmful chemicals in most mainstream products, we look forward to a batch of new brands coming out in 2014. May you all have a beautiful new year!
