“…And God Created Gisele,” declared Vanity Fair in 2009. The Brazilian bombshell certainly does seem to be heaven-sent: not only is she stunningly beautiful, but she is a passionate environmental campaigner too.
Growing up surrounded by long, white beaches and lush tropical greenery had a large impact on a young Gisele, and when she first realised the devastating effects that water pollution and deforestation were having on an Indian tribe by the Xingu River in Brazil, she was inspired to begin her eco-campaigning. In order to do so at that time, she sought the assistance of the Grendene footwear company to work together on various environmental projects in the Amazon region in order to support the indigenous people there.
Further eco-philanthropy followed, and in 2011, the supermodel was voted Best Green Celebrity at the Green Awards in London in 2011, and here are just some of the reasons she was so deserving of the title: in 2008 Gisele and her father established the Projeto Água Limpa (Clean Water Project) in her hometown, Horizontina; in 2011 she helped drive 4,229 WED (World Environment Day) activities ranging from clean-ups in the Republic of Congo to cycling in Nepal. Returning to beauty, her organic skincare line, Sejaa, is now available online and offers all natural ingredients and eco-friendly packaging.
The continuing efforts of model, mother of two and wife to footballer Tom Brady were once again rewarded in September 2012 when she was dubbed a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). “I have been working on environmental issues for a long time and agreed to become a Goodwill Ambassador to be part of a global and far-reaching organisation,” she said in a press statement.
