Tiffany’s Great Gatsby Glamour


“The quietness, the proud look. Nothing very bad could happen to you there,” sighed Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The company has ensured that this sense of ease is found not only in their shops, but in their mines and workshops, too.

With the release of The Great Gatsby coming to the Cannes Film Festival in just over  week, Tiffany’s has created a buzz about the stunning collection of jewellery they’ve created just for the movie, starring Carrie Mulligan and Leonardo Di Caprio. Di Caprio, who starred in the film Blood Diamond, is, of course, fully aware of the potential dangers and moral quagmires of diamond mining, and as a vocal eco-activist, he would never don non-ethical jewels of any kind, so Tiffany’s creations fit right in with the star’s ethos, and the film’s Art Deco theme. Tiffany & Co. established Laurelton Diamonds in 2002, a wholly owned subsidiary that procures rough diamonds and manages their worldwide supply chain that sources, cuts, polishes and supplies finished diamonds to the brand, so the history of each stone is known and traceable at every step of the production process. What’s more, the Tiffany & Co. Social Accountability Program upholds strict standards of quality, environmental and social responsibility, and the company aims to economically develop the areas in which they do business, which is outlined in the  Beneficiation section of their website.

In terms of the environment, Tiffany & Co. cut its normalized greenhouse gas emissions by about 8 percent from 2010 to 2011, according to the company’s latest corporate sustainability report, and gas emissions continue to fall–the company has consistently exceeded its goal of a 10 percent reduction in gas emissions year on year.

While Gatsby may be set in the past, Tiffany’s sustainability policies clearly indicate they have their sights firmly set on a greener, fairer future.
