Whether interpreting beetles, bones or black widows, nature is at the heart of the works of the London based jewellery designer Rachel Entwistle. Her exquisite pieces draw fully from natural history, entomology, symbolism and mythology through a playful reinterpretation of mother nature’s creations.
The Cultural Studies graduate went on to work for various NGO’s and charities in the UK, but it was finally in Mexico that she had the opportunity to develop her love for jewellery. She went on to study at the University of the Arts in Taxco, Mexico, where she not only honed her craft, but learned about sustainable production methods–all materials she uses in her collections are ethically sourced or recycled, and are handcrafted by Entwistle herself in her studio.
After joining forces with Kamilla Thorsen of Dynasty Jewellery, Entwistle opened the Thor & Wistle boutique and studio in London’s trendy Shoreditch neighbourhood, which is the flagship store for the brand, though it is also sold in various fine shops and online at Not Just A Label.
The young jeweller has been featured in Vogue, Bazaar and other prestigious magazines, and her work has been worn by Rita Ora, Jodie Kidd and She’s also collected a number of kudos for her unique designs, such as being nominated for New Designer of the Year at the UK Jewellery Awards 2012, and winner of the International Jewellery London Editor’s Choice for Originality.
This latter award comes as no surprise: not many designers can say their jewellery range includes shiny gold spiders, matte black bats and encrusted scarabs weaving their way across sustainable embellishments of tiny faceted stones and fine chains. But never have creepy crawlies been so charming!
