In bed with the French: Le Lit National

By Diane Small

Ah, bedtime. Finally, it’s time to put your head down, relax, and breathe in the toxic fumes emitted from your mattress.

Yep, that’s right: most mattresses are full of harmful chemicals that can seep into the air of your bedroom, and damage your health. Just some of these include polyurethane foam (a petroleum-based material that emits VOC’s), formaldehyde (linked to asthma, allergies, and lung cancer), Boric acid (to kill bugs), various flame retardants (linked to cancer and nervous system disorders) and PBDE’s, which were very recently banned in many countries, but were then often replaced with other just as toxic chemicals instead.

But not to worry–there is one kind of bed you can buy that guarantees an easy sleep: Le Lit National.

The French brand has been trusted for generations. For over a hundred years, the company has been making fine bedding using 100% natural materials, and their designs are so innovative and high-quality, they’ve been shown off at various design fairs, such as 1.618 Sustainable Luxury in Paris.

The Grand Hôtel is their latest and apparently most luxurious creation. Defined by the  exceptional quality of its finishing touches, it perfectly blends tradition with modernity, as well as nature and technology. Its foundation is comprised of a natural vegetable latex mixed with pure wool, offering a comfortable mattress for those who like them soft as a lamb.

But of course, Le Lit National makes all kinds of mattresses with varying degrees of firmness, and it also produces day beds, sofa beds, poufs, bed frames and head boards made from equally natural materials, such as organic cotton, wool and sustainable poplar wood.

Skilled artisans are employed to create each component of each product. For example, each headboard requires the joint effort of three specialists: a carpenter, upholsterer and designer. Made from a strengthened poplar wood frame and covered with a stylish insulating and quilted frontal layer of fibrefill know as “la pelote”, the headboards are first created in soft canvas, and are then finalised with the customer’s choice of material.

Of course, no good sleep would be complete without superior linens, so Le Lit National makes that, too. The brand has designed a range of high quality, 100% organic cotton sheets luxurious enough for the most demanding clients. Dyed with completely natural materials, the collection is offered in five subtle shades: eggshell, lilac, linen, blackcurrant and charcoal grey. Each item created by Le Lit National is presented in recyclable packaging to minimise their impact on the environment.

Given that we spend about a third of our lives in bed, isn’t it worth investing one that will make you sleep easy, knowing that it’s good for your health, and the health of the planet, too?
