We usually associate the Kremlin and Red Square with history and tourism more than fast cars and celebrities, but this June saw celebs witnessing 20 drivers racing incredibly fast electric cars around these iconic sites. With speeds of up to 250km/h, the Formula E’s Moscow leg was the penultimate race in the season’s calendar, before it moves to London for a double header, where the championship will be decided.

Featuring only electric cars, the racing series sees 10 teams competing during the year, and after launching in Beijing in September, it will hold its final race of the season on June 27th this year.

One celebrity who was on hand to witness the event in Moscow was Lindsay Lohan. Although she seemed very excited to be at the race, drivers and officials seemed equally excited to have her there, and insisted on posing for many pics with the actress. Lohan herself uploaded a shot of herself with driver Nelson Piquet Jr onto her Instagram page, stating “Reminds me of doing Herbie the Love Bug for VW and Disney at Fontana NASCAR track.” Hmm, maybe, but these cars are just a bit more speedy than even the most powerful VW.

Witnessing the fastest cars in the world being controlled by the best drivers on the planet is undoubtedly always exciting, but another reason we love the FIA Formula E championship is its commitment to clean energy and sustainability.

Formula E aims to improve the image and perception of electric vehicles and to encourage more people to use them. It’s basically the Green Carpet Challenge for cars!
