When you see clothing like the Stella McCartney Resort Collection for 2017, it’s pretty clear that this is aimed at women dressing for no one but themselves – not a stiletto heel or mini-skirt in sight; silhouettes are slouchy, generous and comfortable. You could say this is a bit of a ‘man repelling’ collection. But you know what? It’s kinda cool.
These are rather arty clothes, with an emphasis on cuts and the drape; asymmetric skirts and beautifully ruched and draped frocks are paired boxy jackets in a nod to the ’80’s (Stella’s clearly obsessed with the era right now, as her paper bag trousers, gold lamé skirts and slogan tees attest to). There’s even an actual hand painted design done in gold on the iconic Falabella bag, and on a gorgeous indigo dress with slit cape sleeves.
And can we talk about sleeves? This collection is all about the sleeves. There are super-long ones that seem to be a nod to Johnny Rotten’s punk/straightjacket look; asymmetric sleeves; puffed sleeves…in fact, there’s not a single conventional sleeve on any look in the collection.
As you’d expect from Stella, the collection is vegan friendly, but this is also some of her more sustainable work, too. Falabella Go nylon totes and backpacks were made from upcycled plastic bottles; dresses were constructed from organic cotton denim and viscose, which started its life as raw material extracted from sustainably managed forests in Norway and Sweden. Her softly shirred denim dress was dyed with vegetable colouring, and all shoes were built with non-animal glue – which was, she said, no easy task to achieve.
And speaking of the shoes, these are the main ‘man repellers’ in the collection. Comprised of super chunky flatforms with a 30’s era V-shaped cleaved toe, and velcro-closure trainers with soles so thick they evoke boxing gloves, this is not the type of footwear you’d be bringing into the boudoir any time soon, but it is hella comfortable.
The one item that would appeal to both genders? The stunning full length cape dress in seductive red. Pair it with a pair of red heels for date night, or with those boxing-glove trainers for an event with the girls.
