Our Top 10+ Natural Toothpastes

Say NO to toxic teeth by using natural toothpastes instead! Here are some of the best toxin and fluoride free toothpaste brands out there

By Chere Di Boscio

Beware! There are toxins in your toothpaste!

Most Eluxe readers will now be aware of the dangerous chemicals lurking in conventional toothpastes. From fluoride and triclosan to sodium laureth sulphate and artificial sweeteners, heavy chemicals in toothpastes can cause everything from thyroid problems and arthritis to liver disease and cancer. A recent study of Colgate Total toothpastes just revealed that there are indeed cancer-causing agents in that brand, and it has been proven that brands with microbeads can actually cause gum disease.

In short, off-the-shelf toothpastes should be off your bathroom shelf forever!

Luckily, plenty of hard-working, good-tasting natural toothpastes instead! They may take some getting used to in terms of their lack of foam and uber-sweetness (caused in normal toothpastes by harmful chemicals like saccharin), but the long term results are well worth it. These natural toothpastes are sometimes even more effective than chemical ones!

Here’s our list of our Top 10+ Natural Toothpastes, below. Don’t worry if these aren’t stocked in your local drugstore or pharmacy; your can  buy all of these easily online. Just click the links in the titles!

8. Weleda Salt Toothpaste

This is perhaps the most controversial of all the natural toothpastes!

Some people love this one – like, obsessively. And some hate it. Why? Obviously because of the salty flavour. This Salt Toothpaste was originally developed in consultation with doctors and dentists, and the rather unique result is an effective cleansing action that is pH balanced.

Salt Toothpaste neutralises caries-promoting acids, particularly after meals. Just half an hour after cleansing the teeth, the normal pH balance of the mouth will be restored, no matter how much sugar and acidic food you’ve eaten.

Price: $8

Place: USA

One of the best natural toothpastes for: Restoring your mouth’s pH balance. Perfect for those prone to canker sores.

9. Buly 1830

Definitely the most luxurious of all the natural toothpastes on this list, Buly 1803 Pomme de Montauban contains thermal water from Castéra-Verduzan – the first spa town in France to have been accredited by the health department for treating ailments.

Formulated to foam very little due to the lack of harmful SLS, this polishing paste combines the cleansing properties of Calcium and Magnesium.

It’s particularly designed to soothe your throat and calm mouth aches. But of course, you can use this any time.

Price: Around $15

…And Don’t Forget Your Mouthwash!

Mouthwash is normally just as full of nasty, toxic chemicals as toothpaste.

If you use alcohol-containing mouthwashes over a long period, this is sure to dry out your mouth and change its natural pH. You may also increase your risk of mouth and throat cancers. If a mouthwash contains a harsh detergent like cocamidopropyl betaine, this makes it even worse.

Mouthwashes also commonly contain fluoride, a systemic poison, and sorbitol or saccharin, which causes bladder cancer in animals. Synthetic colours, aromas and flavourings, which are basically perfumes that only temporarily hide foul odours, are also used in mouthwashes.

So, make sure your mouthwash is pure, like Buly 1830’s, which contains only natural ingredients. We love the Mint Tea flavour, which has a zesty kick and is gently refreshing. And oh! That bottle!

  2. I wish more toothpaste brands would fit all their information on just the tube. I find it pointless and is just more trash to have to take it out of the box and is only immediately going to be thrown away…
I will definitely try the Lavera.

    1. you’d have to have a magnifying glass and a massive tube of toothpaste for me to ‘want’ to read it.

  3. Can’t believe you don’t mention thieves toothpaste. Love my toxin free . No dyes or fluoride. All natural with our young living essential oils. Tastes great . Even mt picky 14 yr old. Love it! Face book: Hugs,Love And Oils

  4. Thanks. I find the antibacterial agents such as Triclosin mess up my digestion. So what I am looking for is one without antibacterials but does contain fluoride.

    1. Fluoride is super toxic! It causes granules of the stuff to calcify in your brain – literally! It’s called brain sand – check it out. It’s also toxic to bones and dangerous for pregnant women. Finally, there’s zero evidence that fluoride does anything to help teeth at all. Avoid!

  5. What of aloe bright toothgel? I learnt it contains aloe Vera gel and bee propolis. No fluoride or additives or other chemicals. I have been using it for over 4yrs now. It keeps the gum healthy, heals wounds, aches or holes. And so on. My kids use it too.

  6. The new brand Akamai is the best I’ve found. It has fulvic acid & aminos for healthy gums and remineralizing of the teeth plus a brilliant blend of essential oils. It was formulated in collaboration with holistic dentists and is endorsed by Dr. Andrea Mustian, DMD Harvard School of Dental Medicine.

  7. Thank you for sharing this with us i was not aware of that toothpaste .i read your article and found jack n jill organic banana toothpaste is best because This is natural organic banana toothpaste but i m confused between welled plant gel toothpaste can u please suggest me which one i should choose??

    1. Hi Hanne

It kind of does: of course no one’s going around eating toothpaste 😉 But if you think of how much toothpaste you’re using over the course of a lifetime, even tiny bits, when ingested twice every single day, can be toxic.

      1. Thanks for the quick reply! And yeah, that does make sense. Do you have a personal favorite toothpaste/mouthwash? I just bought Urtekram Mint & Green Tea Toothpaste to try, but a shop near my house also sells (from the list above) the child toothpaste (#2), Lavera (#3) and Jason (#5)… does one of these stand out from the others? (Then I know which one to buy next time ;))

  8. The best natural toothpaste I found is Kristas Natural Products, its organic, comes in glass and the spearmint is delicious
